Great work Chris.
I'm thinking about adding this to a new site I'm doing. Is there a way to get the gadget to automatically appear in every new post I write, instead of having to add it manually each time?

Seabee 83,

Thank-you for the kind words, I'm glad you like it... I hope that you
can use it.

When you say "automatically appear in every new post" do you mean a
new forum post? (like in your signature)

a new blog topic or post?

or is it a new page on a google site?

On my Google Sites I have had good luck building a new page template
that contains the configured Gadget(s). When I add a new page by using
the template all the gadgets that are part of that template appear on
my new page.

On existing Google Site pages I configure the gadget for the first
page. I then copy the configured Gadget pasting it into the next
page.

Chris

Thanks for the quick reply Chris,
Apologies for the lack of detail in my previous response. I was thinking about setting up an "announcements page" like this http://sites.google.com/site/roscommonscor/scornews on my new Google Site. I was wondering was there a way to get your gadget (or any gadget) to appear automatically in each new post?
I know that it's possible in Blogger, because of the structure of the pages and the ability to edit templates, but I'm guessing that it might not be possible in Google Sites as each post is part of an overall "announcements page" (i.e. a page within a page).

If it can't be done that's no problem - I could always do what you did; copy the code from the configured gadget into the bottom of each new post.
Regards,
Sean

Sean,
I don't know of a way to insert a gadget automatically on an
announcement page... I agree that would be a cool feature. I guess I
think the copy paste work around wouldn't be too painful. I think you
might run into a bigger problem however... I think the facebook 'like'
count does not reset unless you change the URL within the gadget.
Because you would have several gadgets on the same page they would all
have the same 'Like' count and I think they would all have the same
AddThis Analytics count.

Chris

I've been surfing all the "AddThis" options for our Google Site for
the better part of the day. Yours seems to be the only one I can get
to work at all. However there are some errors I'd like to report to
see if there's a fix available.

The "Title" and "Description" fields don't work correctly. Clicking
the share button for Facebook populates the Title field with the name
of the Site + page name no matter what you put in the gadget field.
And no matter what you type into the box, the Description field grabs
the Google page footer as in:
Sign
in
Terms Report
Abuse Print
page
| P
You have to fix these fields manually before sharing.

Also, the URL listed is our lengthy google address instead of our
abbreviated mapped address. No chance of entering this in manually?

Additionally, I'd like to know if the buttons included are in any way
customizable. I'd like to drop Orkut and add a Mail and or add
Bookmark button. Possible?

Thanks

What I think I know...

"the URL listed is our lengthy google address instead of our
abbreviated mapped address"
For the URL parameter
Don't use example "https://sites.google.com/site/tvsgadgets/customers"
Use instead your URL when not logged in "http://www.tvshelp.com/
customers"

'Title' Problem:
Google does not let us put in a page level 'Title' meta tag.

Some services use the 'Title' Parameter in my Gadget and some don't.
If they don't (example: Facebook, Google Buzz), they do a screen
scrape and they get the page 'Title' value from the Title Meta tag
there. I know of no way to force Facebook for example to use the
parameter value in my Gadget. It is important to fill it out
correctly; so other services can use it.

Description problem:
Description field grabs
"the Google page footer as in:
Sign
in
Terms Report
Abuse Print
page
| P "

Google does not let us put in a page level 'Description' meta tag.
Please go to "More Actions|Manage Site|General"

If your site 'Description' value it is empty please put a value in
that field. Then see if that transfers over to the Facebook button
description.

When facebook does its screen scrape it does not see a page
'Description' meta tag so it looks for the 'Site Description' Meta
Tag. If the Site description meta tag is blank it puts in your 'terms'
etc.

My thoughts on button flexibility:
At some point in time I plan to look for ways to allow users more
flexibility in the the selection of buttons. Some buttons such as
email may present its own set of challenges because we are working
with more than one system and sometimes it is hard to get them all to
play together nicely.

I hope this helps.

Regards

Chris

Today I added a new version of 'AddThis 6 by TVS!'. This new version
gives the webmaster more button choices.

Current Version 1.05 revised 03/22/2011 - Today I added a new version

I adjusted the code for the default width of the Gadget from 200 to
250; but that will NOT override existing installations. So new
Installations should handle the wider buttons okay (I think the
Addthis service increased the width of their buttons for some reason
and that created the problem)

On June 8th 2011 we updated this gadget.
The new update allows you to choose from the default 16 x 16 pixel
size buttons or the optional 32 x 32 pixel sized buttons.

- The facebook like button does not re-size to 32 x 32 pixels
- You may need to adjust the width of this gadget

Hi Chris,

Your app is wonderfull, thank you. However, when someone clicks the
Facebook "like" button on Internet Explorer (7) a blank page appears.
Am I doing something wrong? Have a look here: http://www.visualartsportugal.com/
Only happens with IE. With firefox works fine.

Best,

V.

V,
I checked out your like button and it seems to be working like it is
supposed to. I no longer have IE 7 on any of my machines so I can not
test your page with that browser. I did a quick search on the AddThis
forums and did notice it was listed as a problem on at least one post;
but didn't see a fix for it... I know most IE users that visit my
sites are at version 8 (68% last 30 days) version 9 (23.68% last 30
days); hopefully this problem doesn't effect too many people...

Regards,

Chris
