David,

You may remember we discussed the merits of our common laptop at the
last meeting. Where I mentioned that I was having problems with the Wifi.

After hours of playing with settings etc. I ordered a replacement board,
ensuring to get the Intel part no. correct 62ANHMW. However when fitted
it gave a "104 error" from the BIOS and refused to start.
I removed it (returned for refund) and refitted the old one whilst
continuing with fault finding.

However after several hours in used on other work the machine simply
stopped; no reaction from the any key or mouse. (flashing LEDs indicated
a system board fault)
Despair, that a whole afternoon's work was lost, was followed by elation
when I put two and two together and removed the card, and it now works
OK albeit with Wifi error on start up of course.

Were you aware that HP modifies the Intel card so that only it's version
will work with an HP machine?
The next question of course is do you know of a source of cards that are
guaranteed to work without breaking the bank, I can find only one entry
on E-bay that says HP8440p compatible and being from China one never
knows for sure.

Regards

John Brown.

Hi John,

I don't know if HP use a customised Intel board.

It sounds like you have the same card as I have in my 8440p;

I found a UK source (£7.50 + £2.40 pp) but cannot attest to the quality;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HP-539522-001-WLAN-Mini-PCIexpress-Card-WiFi-622ANHU-802-11a-g-n-SPS-572509-001-/272476508590?hash=item3f70dd91ae:g:xTYAAOSwa-dWjPUD

and this which I don't think is chinese (£5.39) given the 3 working day delivery time;
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Intel-Wireless-Mini-PCI-Express-WLAN-Wi-Fi-Card-572509-001-622ANHU/232127330999?_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIC.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D38661%26meid%3D938bf77f82784d14abbda7bbffd9c38e%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D2%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D272476508590

I've ordered a couple from the second source to try out.. (a spare would be useful).

If this doesn't work I suggest contacting one of the suppliers operating via ebay and directly eg MorganComputing or tier1online and asking them for a source or how much they want for one.

I'll let you know if I receive a card and whether it works.

regards,
David

David,

Thanks for your thoughts.

The people at 'The IT Buffs' were quite adamant that it is a known
problem. (fortunately the refund came through today)

Your image is virtually identical to mine. I read somewhere that they
add a HP part number to the back and as far as I can see the significant
number is 539522-001 which is on the 'extra' sticker on the rear of mine
and that is referred to on the first of your links.

The second link seems to have a different model number 622ANHU
and the '572509-001' may reflect this different.

I await the results of your test purchase with bated breath.

Regards

John.

Hi John,

Sucess .. I tried two of the WLAN cards which arrived today from from
laptopsparesrepairs and both worked fine in my 8440p, they have 2 left;

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232127330999

The attached image shows the front and back of the card

The procedure I followed was;

1. remove power and battery
2. press power button for 10 secs to discharge caps
3. remove WLAN cover plate
4. Unscrew (x2) the card screws and slide o;d card out.
5. remove antenna cables
6. attach antenna cables to replacement card
7. slide card in to socket and screw down.
8. replace cover plate, battery and power
9. restart laptop, ensure WLAN led is blue and continue

regards,
David

David,

I also have got a card from laptoprepairs and although the numbers are
not quite as I expected it works a treat.

Thanks again for your help.

Happy Christmas to all our readers.
