Howdy,

I've got pretty much all the parts I need for my Prusa build now, one
thing I'm curious about is the PSU. I've a few PicoPSUs floating
around and I was thinking of using one for my Prusa with a Gen7 board.

Anyone used one of these tiny PSUs for a Prusa before?

Regards,
Keegan

I haven't, but there are a couple of people who have in the wider reprap community. See http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=picopsu+reprap. Gen7 takes 5V from USB and 12V from power supply which picoPSU can do, so no reason why it wouldn't work.

Gen 7 can take 5v from a selection of sources including usb and the main PSU via jumpers/links onboard.

One thing you would need to be careful about with the Pico PSUs is the wattage required for your build. The thing that pushes the envelope is the heated bed which can consume up to 120Watts on it's own! The extruder will consume up to 60Watts and the motors another 60watts. These are top end figures, average usage is normally lower but you need to choose a supply with more than the maximum to operate safely.

Al

The heated bed was something I was wondering about, I've also an old
250W Shuttle PSU which should do the trick so not short of
options. :)

I reckon I'll start with the PicoPSU as I'm not going with a heated
bed to start with, I can crank the wattage up later on.

Thanks,

If anyone can get hold of a load, Server PSUs are perfect. I've got a
400W one I picked up off ebay.
They normally get scrapped with old servers, so can be well worth
salvaging.

Good suggestion. I happen to know a man who is de-commissioning
several servers in teh next couple of weeks. I will see if i can blag
the PSUs.

Malcolm
