It’s entertaining, but the owners of the club are credited as producers, so there is a lot of odd bias in the content. For instance, I dispute the cutting edge genius of Pauly Shore, and if you’re not a fan of Joe Rogan, I don’t think you’ll agree he was as big a groundbreaking influence as the documentary leads you to believe. Plus, using it as part of the rehabilitation of the career of Louis CK is just so very tacky.

On Showtime but also on the iTunes Store

I enjoyed this series -- in spite of not not being the biggest fan of standup. But that brings up one of the show's problems: if you don't know comedians, you won't know -- or care -- who some of these people are. The closing elegiac montage was jam-packed with people that I kept thinking "Who the hell is that?"

The best parts of it, though, reminded me of nothing so much as Robin Williams's last appearance on the Late Show. He (shockingly) didn't do shtick or steal other peoples' material; he and Dave just sat back and swapped stories about the good old days. It was one of the best panels I ever saw Dave do.
