Perry Botkin, Jr. had written for the 1971 film "Bless the Beasts and Children" a piece called "Cotton's Dream."  Two years later, a new daytime soap opera called "The Young and the Restless" (that was owned by Columbia Pictures, who released the film) used "Cotton's Dream" as their theme music, with lyrics written thereafter that rechristened the song as "The Young and the Restless."  Three years later, Mr. Botkin's composition had received a new title as ABC used it to accompany the medal-winning performances of gymnast Nadia Comaneci--as "Nadia's Theme," it hit the Billboard Top 10 and became a highlight in a TV, recordings and film career that spanned decades--he was also a member of the Cheers, who had a 50s hit with "Black Denim Trousers" (along with future actor and game show host Bert Convy).  Mr. Botkin died yesterday, no cause provided:

“Bless the Beasts and the Children” will always have a special place in my heart. Around the time my parents started letting me take the bus 20 min by myself to go to the movies (In Panorama City), I showed up when the theater opened and watched the same two movies over and over (the days of the Double Feature): Bless the Beasts, and Harold and Maude. Saw each film three times. H&M became a cult classic (I would later often show it for my psychology classes), but for years I never met anyone who had ever heard of Bless the Beasts.
