Okay here's my usual request.    This trip will be in September 2016.   Idea is to land in Vegas,  do grand Canyon,  Sedona,  Coachella valley , then head to San Diego. Fly out of San Diego.

Opinions and suggestions welcome on things to see.  Time frame is ten days.

My only knowledge of San Diego is from down in our rendezvous..... the zoo opening.

Thanks everyone.

My favorite places to take tourists visiting San Diego are the Hotel Del Coronado and Balboa Park. I'm not sure if the Chuck Jones Gallery is still in the Gaslamp District, but they always used to have some cool animation cells and artwork. La Jolla is probably the best touristy-type beach in San Diego with lots of nearby places to eat (Ocean Beach is basically the stoner beach and Pacific Beach is the place to go bar-hopping near sand). If you have to choose among the San Diego Zoo, Wild Animal Park, or Sea World, I'd recommend the Wild Animal Park (though the zoo is adjacent to Balboa Park).

As for Vegas, aside from the Deep Fried Twinkies on Fremont Street, I got nothin' positive to say about the place.

I'll second the recommendations for both the Hotel del Coronado and Balboa Park in San Diego.  I also like the Old Town Historic Park, and the nearby Mormon Battalion Historic Site.  But I also visited several battlefields during the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, so your mileage may vary.

If you go through Flagstaff (just a guess), the Lowell Observatory there is where Pluto was discovered.
In Sedona there's a *lot* of t-shirt shops and similar touristy stores, with New Age stylings scattered about.  It snowed a fair amount of the time I was there, so what outdoor stuff I did was limited to hiking not far off road between Sedona and Oak Creek (to the south), but jeep tours and/or aerial tours are options worth researching.  On the off chance that church architecture is your thing, check out the Chapel of the Holy Cross.  Tuzigoot National Monument (preserved pueblo), is about a 40 minute drive west of Sedona.  There may be other ancient sites closer to your route between Sedona and the Coachella Valley.

Thanks so far to everyone.

Any suggested hiking trails people have done? Perhaps with nice views?   Maximum duration around four hours.

I'm already looking into the ones at the top of San Jacinto (starting from the top of the tramway/gondola).

I can recommend some places to eat in Vegas if you give me a price range and type of food you like.
The Mob Museum looks interesting,  but I haven't been there. I visited other museums there. The Atomic Museum was the best, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. The Neon Museum was closed the last couple of times I was in Vegas. It has potential.

Kevin M, to Doug Eastick, in part:

http://www.chuckjones.com/locations says it is still around.

If you're a burger guy, you absolutely have to hit Hodad's:

If you go to Hodad's, expect to wait at least an hour before walking inside the door. I'm not saying it isn't worth the wait, but there will be a wait.

My relatives took me to trails at Torrey Pines that were nice. Right on the ocean. They vary in difficulty.
It's a little north of San Diego, so I don't know if it's out of your way.

Don't forget the Pinball Hall of Fame and Museum in LV. Always worth a visit.
