The Emmy nominees got announced yesterday. Here's Variety's list - https://variety.com/2019/tv/news/emmys-2019-nominations-complete-list-1203268665/

But I have a couple of questions that spring from these awards.

- The Variety (Special) Live award. Is this a category purposefully built to hand out awards to other awards shows? Only the Emmys themselves don't seem to be on the list! I would argue that if this isn't a broad enough category to include a wider variety of shows, then it should be replaced by something more useful (e.g. New drama series).

- Structured v Unstructured Reality Programs. I'd love to see the definitions for this, since while series like Deadliest Catch or Ru Paul's Drag Race are considered "unstructured" I'm pretty sure they're heavily "structured" in their production.

- Where would a proper documentary series go? Maybe there's a whole separate Emmy Awards for them, but the Informational Series or Special award seems very broad, including Letterman's Netflix show as well as Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Where would a 'proper' documentary series from someone like Ken Burns go?

FOX has 2 NFL games before the Emmys this year- and one involves the Giants(the other- Panthers-Cardinals; the Giants are in Tampa)

Adam Bowie, in part, today (7/17):
- The Variety (Special) Live award. Is this a category purposefully built to hand out awards to other awards shows? Only the Emmys themselves don't seem to be on the list! I would argue that if this isn't a broad enough category to include a wider variety of shows, then it should be replaced by something more useful (e.g. New drama series).

This category has been here since the 90s, evolving from the Special Class awards... non-awards ceremonies have been up for them, e.g. Live from Lincoln Center / Great Performances entries, multiple Olympics opening ceremonies, even that Louis CK special from 2012... many of those "_____ LIVE!" things networks HAD to undertake, got nominated...

- Structured v Unstructured Reality Programs. I'd love to see the definitions for this, since while series like Deadliest Catch or Ru Paul's Drag Race are considered "unstructured" I'm pretty sure they're heavily "structured" in their production.

From the Academy's manual...

Structured: "For programs that contain consistent story elements that mostly adhere to a recurring structured template"

Unstructured: "For programs that contain story elements driven by the actions of characters and lacking a consistent structured template"

My way of telling them apart is, if the issues in any one episode are addressed within that episode, it's structured.
