Due to a brain-damage-induced inability to speak. Holy cow.

From this and other versions of the story I have read (see
https://apnews.com/article/3f127ab624284bff244afc5da3f503a5) It is not clear his problem is an inability to speak. There are several kinds of aphasia (e.g. expressive, receptive). Even some  expressive aphasias are not quite inability to speak, but often inability to speak coherently.

They also seem not to have revealed what led to his aphasia, it’s almost always neurological, head injury, stroke, could be part of certain kinds of dementia.

In any case, particularly cruel for someone always marked by his charismatic glibness and verbal agility.

Was particularly shocked by the news in the AP story that he was in 5 movies released last year direct to video.

There was a special Razzie award given this year for "Worst Performance by Bruce Willis in a 2021 Movie," with eight nominees -- the "winner" was a film called "Cosmic Sin," which apparently did play in theaters briefly last March (with a simultaneous VOD release).

That said, given this news, I wonder if he and/or his family and/or his "people" intentionally got him into a bunch of movies over the past couple of years because they could foresee his condition causing him to have to stop acting, that is, knowing there would be a point when there would be no new income available.

Response A: I guess there will be no Return of Bruno

Response B: The Anselmo Case remains unsolved and is a mystery to this day

As somebody who has frequented the DVD rental kiosks, I can say with some certainty that Mr. Willis is one of many actors who have done a *lot* of direct to video films over the last....decade?  And on those days when my YouTube recommendations seem thick with trailers for Eastern European and Asian produced movies, Mr. Willis has shown up their a few times.

While I didn't recognize it at the time, it seems that the last chance many of us may have seen Mr. Willis in full wisecrack, at least metaphorically speaking, would have been at his Comedy Central Roast in 2018 or in the Between Two Ferns movie in 2019.

For me, anyway, his sense of humor made his action films much more enjoyable.  When a project didn't have that, even a little, it just seemed like a wasted opportunity.

I read a fascinating article somewhere (wish I could find it) a year or two ago describing this category of action movies where past-their-peak stars would come in and act for a few days in roles that were more than a cameo but considerably less than you would think from their prominent billing that helped sell the movie worldwide. They weren't confined to one or two scenes, but the character would periodically pop up throughout the movie. Willis was one of the notable stars doing this ... and now, of course, we know why.

Apparently the folks behind the Razzies are wrestling with what if any retroactive action they should take regarding Willis' recent "award" -- they have publicly expressed regret about a few past ones to other actors, notably Shelley Duvall in The Shining:
