Laura Ingraham has ashes on her forehead tonight from Ash Wednesday. Sean Hannity does not. Both are Catholics.

On a more serious note, Geraldo Rivera apparently "blindsided" Hannity by calling for gun control on FOX News.

Ash Wednesday is a non-denominational tradition. Christians are encouraged but not required to not wash the ashes from their forehead as a symbolic gesture. That said, it is virtually impossible for the sign of the cross to still be visible on ones forehead in the evening. Which means it is likely Ingraham’s was reapplied by either she or her makeup artist. Which would make it a disrespectful symbolic gesture.

As someone who was brought up a Catholic it's worth noting that there is no set time during the day for placing of ashes on someone's head to take place. Assuming Ingraham broadcasts from New York, there are likely to be multiple masses she could have attended to fit in with her radio and TV needs.

I don't know when Ingraham's show airs, or is recorded, but it's not *impossible* that she had ashes applied relatively close to airtime. Although you would expect her to be prepping her show in its immediate run-up.

But it's also worth noting that in my experience priests are very inconsistent in their application. With some it's barely noticeable; with others it looks like you've been attacked by a Sharpie.

I don't doubt that it's possible that the ashes were touched up prior to air. And in any case, most TV presenters would have had a reasonable amount of make-up applied - not least powder to stop you glowing - which would have covered up a lot of the ash even if the presenter didn't wash first.

There's no requirement in the Catholic church to either keep or not wash the ash off after mass.

I was raised Catholic. The nuns told us the ash could come off in normal action, but we weren't allowed to specifically target it. But they may not be citing official church doctrine.
After I sent this I read other churches do ashes on the forehead. I thought only Catholics did it.

I attended Catholic school for a few years. One nun told me that beer makes good rat poison because rats don’t fart or burp, so they will explode from the carbonation.

Our nuns were awesome.

I really don't see this comedy traveling at all, but if you get the chance, Derry Girls from Channel 4 is the funniest comedy I've seen for ages.

It's about a bunch of teenage girls at a school in (London)derry in Northern Ireland during the Troubles in the 90s.

The nun who's headmaster of their school is fantastic.

Agreed. I came across a clip of the nun on Facebook and started binge-watching. The show is hilarious and the soundtrack is great.

I found the "Derry Girls" pilot on YouTube and watched it and loved it.  I didn't pursue it after that, though.
Then yesterday "Derry Girls" showed up on my Netflix queue. I caught the second episode and I'll watch the rest. Netflix describes it as a Netflix series. Maybe they've come up with money for a second season?  IMDB says there will be a second season but has no details.

Glad you enjoyed it. Funnily enough, my 82 year old father was just telling me how much he enjoyed it too.

The subject of what is and isn't a "Netflix Original" is really interesting - or at least is of moderate interest to readers in this group. If you have some time, there's a great piece by Matthew Ball, a former Amazon exec who writes for Redef. He explains that Netflix stretch the term "original" very widely: https://redef.com/original/how-the-paradox-of-the-phrase-original-series-explains-the-video-industry-netflix-misunderstandings-pt-4

He says that there are several types of "Originals" - most of which Netflix label the same:

Developed Originals - e.g. Stranger Things - which Netflix developed and fully control.

Acquired Originals - e.g. Narcos - developed by a third party and then bought by Netflix.

Co-Licensed Originals - e.g. Star Trek Discovery - where Netflix shares the production cost with other networks in other territories. Outside the US (and Canada?), Star Trek Discovery is labelled a "Netflix Original."

Licensed Originals - e.g. Better Call Saul - where Netflix just buys the shows on the market. In most of the world outside the US, this is only on Netflix.

Licensed Series - e.g. Friends - where second runs onwards are just licensed for a territory.

Ball notes that the first FOUR might all be labelled a Netflix Original in some territories! I suspect that Derry Girls is either a Co-Licensed Original or a Licensed Original. Channel 4 which shows it in the UK definitely hasn't dropped it or stopped making it, and Netflix is just labelling it as their show in the US (and perhaps elsewhere) because they can. I suspect that they'll actually have little creative control of the series.

This murkiness in what is and isn't an original almost certainly helps them claim to have lots more series when FX does their analysis, than perhaps they really do. Sometimes they have some creative say, but other times, they're just getting their money out.

BTW - If you have some time, and haven't read them, all Matthew Ball's pieces at Redef are well worth reading.

They could be Episcopal / Anglican. They do the ashes too. I think some Lutheran churches do as well.

I'd say until now TV journalists felt a need not to stand out in that kind of way in front of their audiences. This looks performative even if these people go to mass/services and get ashes every year. The interesting thing is there are a lot of evangelicals who assert that Catholics aren't christians and wouldn't identify with this Catholic form of public piety.

Steve, I think I have missed the context for your interest in how many Catholics work for Fox News, could you summarize it for me? Or is this an allusion to something in Derry Girls ( I have not seen it yet but have it in que on Netflix)?

I made the original post an Ash Wednesday a year ago and pointed out Laura ingraham had ashes on her forehead and Sean Hannity did not. I asked, with a great deal of snark, who is the better Catholic? Since the thread dealt with Catholics, there was some thread drift and Adam brought up "The Derry Girls" which I followed up on after watching the show. And then after this year's Ash Wednesday and the ashes on the forehead, I returned to the original topic.
Ingraham had ashes on her forehead this year too, but they were largely faded.

As it happens, Derry Girls is back this week on Channel 4 in the UK! The first episode sees the Catholic Derry girls go on a "Friends across the barricades" weekend with some Protestant Londonderry lads. They may have ulterior motives.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll be coming to Netflix in the US soon enough.

[Also worth checking out is Home, a sitcom which incredibly is about a Syrian refugee who sneaks into the country in the back of an SUV when a family return from holiday. Really smart and a very different subject for a comedy. Oh, and Fleabag is back this week too - that'll be on Amazon in the US. The first episode is like a beautiful one act play. Oh, and finally, there's also "This Time" with Alan Partridge, which sees the return to "BBC TV" of the character. But frankly, if you've not watched years of Partridge before - the character is now something like 25 years old - and are familiar with our slightly unusual early-evening TV, then it won't make a great deal of sense. Anyway, four excellent comedies all on at the same time! And all probably just 6 episode each :-)  ]

Thanks Steve for that great and helpful summary.

As others have noted there s nothing distinctively Catholic about the ashes on the forehead. Also, there was s no real obligation for people to keep the ashes on all day, and I know many devout Christians whose practice is to wash it off right after leaving church. Almost by definition, wearing the ashes on tv by journalists is performative and (IMO) indulgent. I see now that your observations are playful and teasing. Still may be worth noting in passing that ashes on the forehead is not a meaningful indicator either of Catholic affiliation or religious piety.
