Dave Chappelle won the Grammy for Best Comedy Album last night for the soundtrack to his 2021 Netflix show "The Closer," which contained a lot of what was considered attacks on transgendered people, caused picketing and trans Netflix employees quitting their jobs--and gave Chappelle a contract to do more five more standup shows for the service while Ted Sarandos waved the "free speech" banner:

For the record,  this is Chappelle's fourth Grammy--his previous wins were from 2018 to 2020, all soundtracks of Netflix specials (and his shot-during-COVID for Netflix "8:46" was nominated for spoken word recording in 2021).

And I forgot to mention that there are some who might be relieved that Chappelle beat Louis C.K. in the category.

The difference between “The Closer” and Chappelle’s previous work is that previously moderators like “perceived as transphobic” could be used, and there was at least room for defenses like “hey, he makes fun of everybody.” With  “The Closer” it is clear he is being intentionally, unapologetically and brutally transphobic, and is asserting not the common humanity of trans people by making fun of them too, but that trans people are not really people, and do not deserve the same kind of respect or care that humans generally do.

And its not like Grammy voters didn’t have other options; besides Chappelle and CK they had:

Comedy Monster, Jim Gaffigan
A Little Brains, A Little Talent, Randy Rainbow
We All Scream, Patton Oswalt

On a related note:
The Grammys had their first trans woman winner last night, as Kim Petras received the best pop duo/group performance for her collaboration with Sam Smith on “Unholy.”
