it's entirely possible that MSNBC provided the old news to Variety to distract from the racism accusation

Someone let her know that this wasn’t a “black thing”. It was a “lousy show thing”.
As far as Alex Wagner, this was inevitable after the soft exit that they gave her. Whatever the network is going to be called next is now driving an armored car out to Rachel Maddow’s house to convince to to continue to do a show at least four days a week.

Joy Reid hosted possibly the worst news-like show not on Fox News. Terminating that show was long overdue, and the first step for any news director hoping to enhance the credibility of MSNBC news.
