Please, oh please, let them get somebody who is an old-school journalist to anchor the newscast.

I miss Peter Jennings.

I miss Jennings too.
But I like Pelley. His has been the only network news I've watched since late last year, and I liked the way he would do fact-checking of Trump.
(Though his choice not to start the broadcast with even a simple "Good evening" has always struck me as oddly clinical and cold, and it may be part of the reason why audiences never warmed up to him.)

"Anthony Mason will serve as interim anchor of the CBS Evening News after Scott Pelley was pushed out of the chair. The broadcast is still titled the CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley, and sources at the network say Pelley will return to say farewell to viewers, said multiple CBS News sources. The network has yet to officially announce Pelley's departure."

Katie Couric is available.
Pelley was a battlefield promotion. He was fine, other than his ratings sucked.
CBS was still the most-watched network last time I checked (NBC won the demo!) so his ratings should be higher.  A lot of that could have to do with how many CBS affiliates have Judge Judy or Ellen.
Who could make a ratings difference. Maybe Megyn Kelly. Just spitballing here, but what about Rachel Maddow? Sure they would write off the right but she might draw in the youth and others who don't currently watch the news.

This is surprising and disappointing to me. IMO Pelley is clearly the best if the three network news anchors, and among the best to have the job in last 20 years. I also thought he was tight with Capus. I read the personality clash with Rhodes, but not what the substantive beefs were about him. I don't buy the ratings excuse - they are not meaningfully worse than they've been for a long time.

I want to avoid a hot take because the timing is so strange. Also Pelley stays in the organization and goes back full time to 60 Minutes instead of being tossed off the lot. If the CBS Evening News needs to be shaken up, change the Executive Producer, not the anchor. NBC was doing well with Brian Williams. When they had to send him into exile they only changed him for Lester Holt and there was no major dip in the ratings. If CBS is underperforming an anchor change will not reverse it.

Old school journalists, those who broke in by writing for newspapers or started in radio, are pretty much retired or have been laid off long ago. And younger people who are doing good journalism might not want to give it up to anchor a relatively low rated evening newscast.

If it was ratings, you'd think they'd have made a more graceful transition. Like having a successor named. Still, coming this close to the upfronts, I wonder if some larger affiliates were making noise about the low ratings and demanding significant action lest they do something themselves.
Time will tell.

The strange timing might be related to a contract negotiation.

This is how the Daily Beast summarized that:

"Rhodes is said to have been irked when Pelley hired sharp-elbowed Hollywood super-agent Ari Emanuel three years ago to aggressively negotiate a massive raise from the $5 million a year he was reported to be earning in 2014. In Pelley’s defense, he was among the more productive journalists at 60 Minutes while holding down his evening gig—and his compensation was a fraction of that of his peers at the other networks."

Also, I see I was mis-remembering Rhodes, it was his former boss Jeff Fager (now back at 60 Minutes full time since 2015) who had the special relationship with Pelley

Interesting. I now have my hot take: CBS News is the Cleveland Browns of the TV news business. In a league devoted to parity, with a hard salary cap, and where a failing team gets a head start on its rebuild with the first draft choice, the Browns have managed to underperform for decades. Analysts, as well as current and former NFL players and coaches, say that it is a long term failure of the management culture and the quality of the front office.

CBS News has the third rated newscast, which they have had for decades, and their corporate culture is going to doom them to stay there.

So it sounds like Pelley got a steep pay raise but got did not boost the ratings. It looks like if they want to pay big bucks to an anchor they will do it to someone who improves the ratings.

It sounds to me that CBS saved millions on what they were paying Katie to get an upgrade in their journalistic credibility.

Frightening thing is that somebody like Katie Couric would probably do well ratings-wise. I wonder if CBS will poach whomever NBC drops from the Today on-air crew to make room for Megyn Kelly's stupidity? "The CBS Evening News with Matt Lauer" might not be a punchline anymore, sad to say.

When Muir got his raise he was the lowest paid of the three network anchors by far. Now he is probably the highest paid, as the other two of down-scaled on the marquee value of their anchor. You could say it has not made much difference, or it could be part of the reason that even in the age of Trump network news ratings have begun dropping again.

After reading about this for a day or so my conclusion is now that CBS paid Pelley when they thought they needed him to recover their news credentials after the Katie-cast humiliation, and now feel like they don't need that boost anymore, and dont want to pay either the cash or the having to put up with his "I am the last Jedi" Murrow-ism.

Pelley says complaints to execs led to evening news ouster

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Former "CBS Evening News" anchor Scott Pelley says he lost that job because he wouldn't stop complaining to management about the hostile work environment for men and women.

The "60 Minutes" correspondent tells CNN's Reliable Sources Sunday that things have changed after 18 months of dramatic management changes amid a slew of scandals and misconduct claims at CBS.

Executives who have departed include Jeff Fager of "60 Minutes," network news president David Rhodes, anchor Charlie Rose and CBS Corp. CEO Leslie Moonves.

Pelley says he was warned about agitating too much internally. Now he says that with the promotion of people like Susan Zirinsky to head the news division, that it's all blue sky from here and the network is on the right track.

I wish you had gotten it directly from the source instead of an illiterate Trump-loving moron (read the guy's feed).

So I guess Pelley is back working at the evening news through next week. This was a funny Tweet.

The today Show makes more money than the Nightly News. Makes more sense to put her there.
