And the winner IS.............. David Boreanaz!  Nellie said only two offers were extended for the job, and the other prospect would only commit if the series was guaranteed to shoot in L.A. (pilot filming will be in Atlanta, with some L.A. stuff; any more SoCal activity likely depends on if/when a Calif. tax credit app comes through); the former Seeley Booth reunites with "SEAL Team" execs Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly at Universal TV:

Los Angeles was as much of a character in the original series as James Garner.

If they want to produce a detective series filmed in Atlanta starring Boreanaz, go for it. Give him a gold Trans Am if they absolutely must. But they can't call it The Rockford Files because it isn't.

The gist I got from the OG* was that Rockford's ass was grass from jump, and it only remained to be seen when his enemies would put him into a near-death sitch in some hospital. Maybe David B's Rockford will be a little more cunning, and outfox the opposition in more exciting, and more importantly, late-2020s contemporary ways (what UTV wanted to do with the Magnum revival, maybe?) No update on financing from FilmLA, apparently.

*Granted, I was a teen at the time, and couldn't completely relate not only to these types of dramas, but frankly anything outside of live sports

Does the Kathy Bates Matlock have anything to do with the Andy Griffith Matlock besides being a legal drama? It still makes no sense to me that they keep resurrecting old titles for new shows, but I guess it works for somebody.

It's not hard to imagine Boreanaz succeeding as a Rockford-like private eye, and that has nothing to do with the show's title.

The answer is no, although there is the suggestion that the creator knew enough about the original (source: https://www.tvline.com/interviews/matlock-cbs-premiere-twist-ending-madeline-kingston-revenge-dead-daughter-1235337411/ (9.22.24))
