Viewers of WPXI/11 Pittsburgh, f'rinstance, will like that local hero Zachary Quinto's next project, "Dr. Wolf," inspired by the life and work of Oliver Wolf Sacks (1933-2015), whose treatment of people with the sleeping sickness encephalitis lethargica inspired the hit 1990 film Awakenings (Robin Williams? Robert DeNiro?), was greenlit by NBC this past week, but will have to wait out the actors' strike before any filming can begin...

Unlike some other shows based on experts related to human behavior/cognition, Sacks is both a deserving and super interesting subject. He was one of the greatest clinical neurologists ever. A prolific author, Awakenings, as good as it was, is probably no better than his third best book. If you have not done so, I strongly recommend reading “The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat”, though almost all of them are worth the read. I heard him speak numerous times, and had the chance to talk briefly with him a handful of times, and he was always patient and kind and interesting. I doubt a TV show will be able resist the urge to turn him into some kind of superhero, but if the visibility gets more people to read his books it will be a service.

It’s 2023, so any TV show will deconstruct the hero. He will be portrayed as a drug addict or a philanderer or a child beater or a Republican

I've read several of his books, which are interesting and well-written. I was reading "The Mind's Eye" on a flight, and after reading his vivid description of his own eye surgery, I had to put my head down and take deep breaths for a few minutes. That was August 30, 2015 - after the flight, I learned he had died earlier that day.
