It's a big headline in Sudbury here. My home town, and Alex's too.

I saw this earlier this week with the John Candy tributes, but "Alex" is in this too.

Half Wits game show.

Given the PM’s current scandal – which, like everything else re: US v Canada, is quite tame – some of the responses are inappropriate to the category at hand and very few are in the form of a question.

Knowing the statistics – given that pancreatic cancer claimed my mother in 2007 at age 59 – I can’t say it’s too favorable for the 78-year-old Wizard of Odds.

They are searching for a replacement.

Trebek threatened to quit the show and they threatened to not renew his contract.

Those threats were made years ago and are not current events, as seems to be suggested by the placement of that particular line in Steve Timko's original post.  With the 4-year extension of Trebek's contract in 2016, it ought to be safe to assume the hard feelings were worked out and things were good up to the point when he announced his cancer diagnosis.

The article is attributed to American Media Inc. -- i.e., the National Enquirer -- and refers to "the network that has been his home for 30 years."  I would take anything it says with a LARGE grain of salt.

("The network..." may be a clumsy reference to the ABC owned-and-operated stations, which have been carrying "Jeopardy!" since 1990 and are the largest station group that carries the show. They obviously have some influence over Sony, which produces the show, and CBS, which distributes the show, but they certainly don't have direct hiring-and-firing authority over the host.)

Any of us could have written that article. There was no reporting done - not even a call to Sony or Trebek's publicist. Somebody just googled and found some old stories about Trebek and wrote it out.

I wish Alex the best and I hope he is still able to host in September. And I know that some cancers are more aggressive than others and there are new treatments all the time to fight what were once fatal cancers. But given Stage 4 (spread to other tissues) pancreatic (often aggressive) cancer in a 78 year old man, I would not bet on it.

If past years are any indication (and assuming Alex's health permits), they'll probably start taping for the new season in late June/early July, so Alex's "September" will be sooner than the viewers' will be.

Do we know when he taped this? There's a video on the TCM Backlot site (firewalled) of him introducing "Wuthering Heights" at the Festival last weekend, and in it (and it's admittedly poor-quality), it looks like he's wearing a toupe. I don't blame him if he is, but it seems like he would have lost an awful lot of hair awfully quickly.

Alex Trebek, saying he's on the mend, back at 'Jeopardy!'

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek has returned to work, saying he's "on the mend" following treatment for pancreatic cancer.

The game show posted a video Thursday on Twitter showing the 79-year-old host back on set and promising "a good year" ahead. He actually started work on July 22, his birthday.

New episodes of the upcoming Season 36 are slated to begin airing on Sept. 9.

Trebek announced his diagnosis in March. He said he planned to beat the disease's low survival rate with the love and support of family and friends and with prayers from viewers.

The American Cancer Society estimates 3% of patients with stage 4 pancreatic cancer are alive 5 years after being diagnosed.

I’ve begun to notice a little bit of wobbliness in his hosting duties over the past few episodes, and I’d imagine other will have too. None of it seems so serious as to impact his hosting duties but it’s disheartening all the same.

I'm dealing with a parent who is still around but no longer bounces back after medical issues arise. In the media depiction of cancer it is a challenge the hero overcomes and then returns to the way things were. That is the way Trebek chose to frame his illness. I think it leads to a sort of denial where we want Trebek to be okay and he says he will be so he must be up to his hosting duties.

I see two sides: Trebek is going through a difficult procedure and should get maximum rest and not go through the stress of doing the show, and the show is what gives Trebek a reason to get up in the morning and it should not be taken away from him. My guess is that Sony and Trebek have an arrangement where Trebek gets to decide if he can still host the show.
