The link below is to a musical performance of the Mongolian band The Hu on The Tonight Show Starring Ankhbayar.  No, I hadn't heard of the show either, but it's from Central Television in Mongolia. What grabbed my attention is that the set visuals, show title graphics, and even how the host introduces the band borrow heavily from East Coast Jimmy's version of The Tonight Show.  I don't think we have something along the lines of Craig Ferguson and Arthur or David Letterman and Harald Schmidt, but it's in the ballpark.

Based on this promo video (with a blink and you'll miss it shot of Radio City Music Hall) that has an NBCUniversal logo at the end, this was probably licensed.

FWIW, one of Fallon's many forgettable game shows, "That's My Jam" was sold to Central Television a couple of years ago, and Fallon even did a promo video for it.

Best,
David

That musical performance was awesome. That was maybe the best new music I’ve heard all year. The band was only some facial latex away from being a Klingon band.

This reminds me of something I learned in a Latin American music class. When radio became widespread in Central and South America after WWII the new stations needed recorded music to broadcast and they used a lot of American music. So jazz, big band, crooners, etc became popular in Latin America and influenced songwriting there. Then some of that music, like Brazilian boss nova, found its way to the US and in turn influenced American songwriters. The Mongolian band did a great job of mixing traditional Mongolian and rock music.

Do you think they do a cover of "Aktuh and Maylota"?

(Seriously, tho - that was an uncanny recreation of Studio 6B...)

The show is definitely an officially licensed Mongolian edition of the mothership.  It looks like it just started this month, running weekly on Sundays.

Here's more of The Hu on The Tonight Show, doing that classroom instruments bit with the host and at least some of the house band (the ones more formally dressed).

The Hu have been around for a bit, with a couple of full length albums and tours under their belt.  Thehuofficial.com. I haven't seen them live, but I've heard good things.
