The groundbreaking jazz pianist and composer, whose left-field 1959 hit "Take Five" is still arguably one of the few "real" jazz recordings played on "smooth jazz" radio, has been heard on television over the years, including writing music for an episode of the 1989 Peanuts animated mini-series "This is America Charlie Brown" and supposedly writing and performing the theme song for the original 1967 ABC version of the game show "Supermarket Sweep," something that would seem to be completely at odds with someone of his intellectual heft--Billboard link includes videos of "Take Five" and "Blue Rondo a la Turk," another cut from his classic "Time Out" album:

Per a Ken Jennings Tweet, two Dave Brubeck Quartet recordings feature in the "Silver Linings Playbook" soundtrack - "Unsquare Dance" and "Maria"

I had the good fortune to see him play in Washington in April of 2011.  The only perceptible concessions to age were the length of the set and the oxygen tank in close proximity.  He was quite pleased to relate that he hadn't needed it that day.

Safe Home

David

Audio only, and done singlehandedly on a modest recorder, but Brubeck is among a sample of interviews originally conducted for a collection of short biographies of music icons by retired record-company exec Joe Smith (I first heard of him when he took the head job at Elektra in the 70s), which he has now donated to the Library of Congress... -- BOB

He grew up in Amador County, Calif., zinfandel country and southeast of Sacramento. Not especially jazz country. And he maintained a home near Susanville, Calif., Interesting roots.
