Of all the streaming services, the only one I subscribe to is the Criterion Channel. The channel just marked its first anniversary and it was a bit of a jolt to see that HBO Max would have the Criterion Collection films. The Nerdist article says that HBO Max will have about 600 movies available to stream and the Criterion Channel has 2100 movies available. If you're looking for HBO content and Criterion movies are an add-on, by all means subscribe to HBO Max, especially at the introductory rate. If you're looking for classic, art house, and foreign movies, the Criterion Channel is cheaper, at $100/year, and has more movies.

Check with your local cable provider. In my area Spectrum offers their premium channel package (HBO, Showtime, TMC, Startz and Encore) for $15/month.
This includes access to all of their linear channels plus access to their on demand apps. Spectrum announced an agreement with AT&T where their HBO subscribers would also have access to HBO Max.

Few major cablecos have agreed to provide HBOMax access to linear subscribers thus far; I suspect Spectrum signing on has something to do with those networks being the former Time Warner Cable. (But I cant prove that.)

Wikipedia says that Time Warner Cable eliminated the "Road Runner" marketing in 2012. I actually first subscribed to Time Warner Cable internet service a little before that, circa 2010 or 2011, and it seemed to me like they were already moving away from the Road Runner name at that time -- although I do have a roadrunner.com email address that I never use. Presumably, Spectrum is still paying WarnerMedia in order to continue using that domain name so they don't have to make existing subscribers change their email addresses. (I believe new subscribers currently get an email address in the spectrum.net domain.)
