Before I finish and send this post it is possible SCOTUS will announce its worst ever kept secret, the ruling overturning Roe and officially setting back the clock 48 years.

Matt Bellloni (Puck News) is reporting that “Netflix, Comcast, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony, and Paramount Global, all told me they are joining Amazon in offering to reimburse travel expenses for employees in states that ban abortion who wish to end a pregnancy.” Disney, OTOH, declined to comment, perhaps not wanting to be first in line for another spanking from the Florida conservatives. But, Belloni write, “I’m told by a good source that its employees—including the thousands in Florida—almost certainly will be reimbursed for abortion travel.”

I’m thinking an important non profit to get started is paying for poor women to travel for abortions. Also, of course, more TV and movies where people actually get abortions (we might not be where we are if that had been happening over the last four decades).

Also, Belloni notes that “The Writers Guild [is] calling for studios to yank filming from states that ban abortion” and wonders is that will gain enough traction to actually impact production in Red states like Georgia, Texas, and, of course, Florida, which “all host significant studio productions.”

My wife and I have discussed this at length, and I’ve done some amateur fact-finding. And although this is undoubtedly a setback for women’s rights, the practical reality is that states have been systematically stripping away those rights while Roe was in effect. Symbolically it is a huge victory for the fringe right wing. But the reality is they’ve been victorious for several years. If you live in a red state, you’re probably already unable to get an abortion under normal circumstances. If you’re in a blue state, you probably can. That was as true yesterday as it was today.

The true debate following Roe is if this is the start of a slippery slope, and we won’t know that for a while. In the meantime, conservative politicians must be held accountable for providing medical and financial support to all the moms they are creating. And liberal politicians must he pressured to use their influence to change the make up of The Court. A madman in the Oval Office made the court into an extremist arm of government; it cannot be allowed to continue as it is.

It’s true that many Red States (and Red Counties in Purple and Blue States) have made it functionally impossible for many poor women to get abortions for many years. Still, this will make a profound difference. It is one thing to want something and not be able to find or afford it, it’s another for that thing to now be illegal. Thousands of women in Red areas who were able to get legal and safe abortions last year will not be able to get them next year.

There is no doubt this is part of a precipitous downward slope. This Court not only wants to criminalize abortion, they want to criminalize contraception, and they want to turn the clock back on gay marriage. Many of them want to undue lots of civil rights law.

This ruling also opens up the possibility of Congress outlawing abortion for the whole country.

If they get control of both houses & the Presidency, the GOP could use a reconciliation bill that cuts off Federal funds to a state if they allow abortions. Thus fulfilling the requirements for a reconciliation bill (and avoiding the filibuster) while still effectively making abortion illegal nationwide.

Actually, even you-know-who "has privately told friends and advisers the ruling will be 'bad for Republicans''”...

There are two kinds of Republicans: 1) the kind that tolerated and used Trump to overturn Roe and achieve related agenda items 2) the kind that used Roe and related agenda items to get Trump power.

Trump really is a racist and autocrat, but obviously he is no Christian fundamentalist. When he first started running he knew nothing about abortion (other than how to pay for one). Early in his campaign he was asked if he really thought women should be out in prison for getting an abortion and he went full Trump on why they should, not realizing that savvy Republicans had long ago learned to duck that punch, and say they wanted to outlaw abortion but not out women in jail. It was a two day story before they taught him how to answer it.

Dobbs will hurt Republicans in upcoming elections, there is no doubt about that. A majority of American voters wanted to retain Roe, at least in some form. Trump wanted to keep Roe as an issue. There is more doubt over how much it will hurt Republicans- I doubt enough to decide who will control Congress (but, maybe).

More interesting to me, Will achieving their goal lead Christian fanatics to abandon Trump and switch over to someone a little more of their own?

And yes, there is a third kind of Republican, almost extinct, that wonders what the fuck happened to their party.

Who cares whether it’s good for Republicans or bad for Republicans? The Supreme Court ended the right to privacy, bodily autonomy, and made pregnant women wards of the state. That’s a vast change in the role of government and the way our institutions, primarily healthcare, work.

Anybody who looks at it simply as a part of the political horse race is an idiot. By that I mean journalists. We already know about Trump.
