With an X-posted picture of a costume package labelled "Irrelevant 50-year-old TV show"...

Aside from Weekend Update (which I thought was first rate) the Spirit Halloween sketch was pretty much the only thing I understood from that first show. The late teens and twentysomething patients I have are unanimous in their reports of how horrible it is to work for them, and how crappy their merchandise is.

And I have the feeling the people who run Spirit are almost as old as Lorne and about as hip as some people think "SNL" is these days.

Well! Far be it from me to defend SNL, but I thought the opener managed to avoid the coveted "utter disaster" rating. The Spirit commercial was good (I honestly thought it was paid promotion), WU was very good (especially Yang as Moo Deng), and even though the sketch with the chimp wasn't good, the puppet was charming -- and I hate puppets.

Of course, Smart butchering Cole Porter and the endless cold opening got things off to a very rough start.

So Spirit can stuff it.
