You'd think with everything going on with Ezra Miller & "The Flash", they'd want something to fall back on.  Also, you'd think by now they'd have learned from Marvel that not everything has to be an outsized blockbuster to engage audiences.

OH WAIT. This is WB we're talking about.

As Emily Litella used to say, "Never mind!"

The rumor is that HBO Max is being folded into Discovery+ and will only have unscripted content.
Scripted content will go to HBO.

Effectively removing HBO from streaming? I don’t see that as a practical option

I assume "...probably as HBO tab" means that movies and original programming from the HBO linear channel will continue to be available for streaming, as part of Discovery+.

That also doesn't make any sense given some of the content deals Warners made - particularly with Sesame Workshop.

Apparently Warner is going to take a rax write off with Batgirl. If so, it will never be seen.

We will see what they actually announce, but this would be consistent with the moves they have made so far. Three keys to understanding the new Warner Brothers Discovery company seem to be:

1. They have to find 3 BILLION dollars of cuts
2. They are using all other assets to enhance Discovery, which is what they see as their main identity (and profit center)
3. They have to find 3 BILLION dollars of cuts.

I can see a near future in which HBO is still available for streaming, but is not a streaming service. HBO would be the main home for live action programming. Most everything else the company does will mostly be non fiction programming, or animation. HBO and CNN will be accessed by going through Discovery+, driving traffic to what now will be the Mothership.

I don’t doubt anything you’re stating, but I find it tough to believe that Discovery is the dominant brand of the two. Is the network globally popular? I subscribe to it mostly for educational shows to use in the classroom, but none of its programming stands out as groundbreaking or water-cooler worthy. Most of it is very cheaply produced crap, to be honest. I might not like a lot of HBO content, but to me it’s a bigger and more recognizable.

Same for me. But this Discovery shows are incredibly popular, mostly evergreen, and (most important) cheap to make. I would not be shocked if the profit margin is much to Discovery’s side, even if they lose on the prestige side. And of course, the people making the decisions there are Discovery people, not HBO or Warners people.

Rumor partly confirmed: Max and D+ merging, but will not have only unscripted content. At least premium scripted movie and TV content from Max will be on the merged stream. What is unclear (at least to me from this source), is if they will be developing any new scripted content for the new streamer, or will all of that kind of stuff just be on HBO?

“Warner Bros. Discovery will merge its HBO Max and Discovery Plus services into a single streaming platform, as part of a plan to hit 130 million paying subscribers by 2025 in the highly competitive market….

means Warner Bros. properties such as the Harry Potter series and the sitcom “Friends” would be available alongside Discovery shows like “Deadliest Catch” and “Worst Cooks in America.” Warner Bros. Discovery will also develop a 10-year plan for its DC Comics franchises that include Superman and Wonder Woman, similar to what Disney did with the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zaslav said.

The HBO Max and Discovery Plus merger aims to cut subscriber losses with a broad offering that has “something for everyone in the household…”
