I defended Dave Chappelle’s latest Netflix special, but he has shown himself to be a first-class ahole.

The community he lives in, Yellow Springs, considered adding affordable housing. Chappelle was furious the city council made him voice his opposition to the plan during the public comment portion of the meeting just like everyone else. He said they made him audition. And then he threatened to pull out business projects he had planned for the town if it passes.

There’s video in this story:

This is classic NIMBY. Chappelle has a gift for insight into humanity, but he is so clueless here. There’s no question he’s punching down in this outburst.

Because I lost faith in the Dayton Daily News after they refused to correct, retract, or apologize for blatant lies in a hatchet piece they ran about the Peace Corps several years ago, I sought a few other sources for more info on this story. This one on Slate seems the most informative.

Giving Chappelle every possible benefit of every possible doubt, he failed to articulate any substantive reason for opposing the proposed building project, and for the town to side with him out of fear he’d take his money elsewhere seems like something the builders/property owners could sue (or at least re-petition) to overturn. But it might be cost prohibitive to do so.

The council was considering a zone change to allow affordable and higher density housing. That failed. So now the developer will proceed to build single family homes the zoning allows.

"Since the rezoning failed, the Oberer subdivision will include a couple hundred single-family, market-rate homes instead of a denser development"

Even if you're persuaded that Chappelle was just against this particular deal rather than any affordable housing project, he still looks like an out-of-touch elitist for flouting local meeting procedures and dismissing a small-d democratic process.  I would assume any local advocates are not happy with him for his tactics, if nothing else.
