While I'm not sure Dave would have done this if it were basically the same spot and NBC had the Super Bowl, I agree with Steve.  It's a spot for Dave's show, not The Tonight Show.

The stage show's kind of meh, but The Who are playing pretty well.

I thought it was great - and great for both of them. This is just the kind of image softener Leno needed. If Dave wants to hold on to some of the viewers who used to watch Leno and moved to him during the Conan months, it can't hurt to show that he and Leno don't really hate each other.

I think the Hollywood insider made a small mistake (this is from memory though, I have not gone back to check). They say that: "Letterman laments about how boring the game is..." - while I think he actually was lamenting how bad the Super Bowl Party was (Leno's punchline is set up better than way).

Why is it easier to understand the lyrics that The Who is singing now that they are old men? It looks like they can't sing as fast as they used to (I just saw one of them stumble over their words) and maybe they are actually sober.

Plus, this might be setting up a return of the favor during the Olympics, which would hedge the downside of 14 days of potential promotion vs the one time mega audience of the SB...

It probably explains a lack of comment from Dave on the Oprah-Leno interview.  I wonder if the unedited tape of that would be as revelatory of the editing process as the O'Reilly-Stewart FNC interview.

If there's to be a quid-pro-quo involving the Olympics, it better be credentials for Dorothy L. in Vancouver.

The spot ends up making everyone even remotely involved look good, and, as has been said, it really was funny, which always solves a lot of problems.

I know the optimism implicit in Leno's statement is what a lot of people like about him - I am not an optimist, and I am suspicious of them. I suspect Dave would not describe this in exactly the same terms, but I would like to think there was at least some reciprocal enjoyment of the two getting together again. In my grad school days one of my favorite things was to wander back to my apartment from the library after a late night of studying or working on a project, turn on my little color portable and see Jay with Dave.

There were a couple of jokes about Jay's appearance in the SB ad in the monologue, but Dave talks about the ad - briefly - during the second segment desk chat.  With Brees on the show tonight, Dave's a bit more focused on his bitterness at the Colts' loss.

Monday night is "Headlines" night and he uses a desk for that segment.

Last I heard, Leno's Tonight Show will utilize the current set for The
Jay Leno Show. Don't know if they'll make the desk a more regular part
of the furniture though.

If it was before or after a bit, the desk is to hold whatever props are needed.  He doesn't use it otherwise.  Since it was Monday's show he probably sat behind the desk for Headlines in the same segment.  I say probably, even though I saw mention of Headlines (Healdlines would be a much better segment, BTW) either on this list or an article discussing the statement.

Meanwhile, Biff bangs up his heretofore good knee at the Ed during the impromptu football tossing while waiting for Drew Brees to get out of traffic.

right? I thought that was a leased space (and scheduled for
demolition at some point)...wouldn't it make more sense to move Jay
into the studio NBC built for Conan at Universal Studios? Or is this
just a stopgap while they revamp the Universal stage to suit Jay's
style?

NBC has a three year lease on the Burbank studios they used to own,
which means, in the short term (which is all they ever bother to think
about), somebody else is handling the general maintenance and upkeep
on the facility. Meanwhile, the old Conan studio is now a state of the
art, HD compatible broadcast studio, just waiting for a game show
(like one of the two versions of "The Cube" people are talking about)
or another talk show (because there is always another talk show) to
move in and pay rent.
