In the never-ending attempt to speed up the awards show a week from tomorrow night and get off by 11 p.m., the Television Academy is requesting that nominees submit their thank-you lists in advance to run as a lower third during their speech (350 characters maximum, can include telling the kids to go to bed) and if they do run over the 45 seconds, the producers are threatening to cut off the next winners early to stay on time:

There may be people (not moi) who wanted them to do this 15-20 years ago...     B

Will award shows on NBC be cut down from three to two hours if they give affiliates back the 10pm hour?

I would welcome moving the thanking of the winner’s various employees and retainers to CC, but not the shortening of speeches themselves. While there are occasional abuses, an Awards show is basically about the acceptance speeches. If you are not wanting to feature those, then just announce the Winners on Twitter.

I would like to see the evidence that suggests that ratings are down due to the show going 15 min over. That pressure has always been coming from East Coast affiliates.

They tried that at the 2016 Oscars, and it didn't work. A scroll at the bottom said "Alicia Vikander would like to thank..." and a bunch of names - but she thanked them all verbally anyway. And she wasn't alone.
