Per Brian Stetler:

Well-placed sources tell me The Late Late Show was costing $60 million to $65 million a year to produce but was netting less than $45 million.

“It was simply not sustainable,” says one executive. “CBS could not afford him anymore.”

Corden got a bigger budget than Ferguson specifically so he could make viral videos and monetize them for added revenue. I wonder if the $45 million includes that revenue.

For those of us who grew up decades ago we knew we wouldn’t always have Carson, but we didn’t know that the American TV landscape wouldn’t need a Carson or Carson equivalent.

Corden did have two segments spin off into stand-alone programs - Carpool Karaoke and Drop the Mic.  He's also had primetime specials, something rare for a late night host these days.

Of the other current guests, I think Fallon is the only one who compares with monetizing bits.  That's My Jam seems to be spun out of his various celebrity music bits from his Tonight/Late Night tenure.  There's also Lip Sync Battle, which ran for a long time on various iterations of what is currently the Paramount network.

While Colbert and Meyers have other projects, they don't seem that linked to their respective shows.  Even Tooning Out the News wasn't that integrated with Colbert's Late Show, aside from occasional quick promos when they were still doing that 2 minute act around 12:20 am.  I guess Our Cartoon President was a recurring bit for Colbert before becoming a show, I don't remember it running that long before getting a show, or being that viral.

So, maybe, the big notion about 10 years ago that virality was important to the future of Late Night hasn't materialized as expected.  I'm not trying to say it doesn't matter, but I think the economic of it haven't justified the expense.

I am curious if Fox is considering moving "Gutfeld!" to the OTA network--probably not, considering their lousy track record with late-night.  But I'm also wondering if Newsmax or OAN will try to go after Gutfeld by trying to find a rightwing standup who will freely say all of those racial and gender slurs on television every night, thinking that will juice the ratings (especially with Carlson gone from Fox).  Yeah, there would be advertising problems, but are there any big advertisers on those channels anyway?  (And besides, considering that Colbert seems to have direct-response on his show every night, even in the first break, where I assume advertisers pay premium prices to share the screen with Louis Cato and the band playing silently and the "coming up" lower thirds...)

Howard Stern said Corden walked away from a ,$50 million late night deal.

I think you're right. A lot of these bits are probably popular on YouTube, but if that's how viewers experience the show rather than watching the whole program, it's unlikely that there's enough revenue to make it worthwhile.
