I know Milwaukee isn't a major market, but Phoenix is the10th biggest metro in the country.  What qualifies as a major market?  Just NY, LA and Chicago?

Seattle, Dallas, DC, Bay Area… I’m blanking on a few others… maybe Denver

Here’s the current list of Nielsen’s Designated Market Areas - Phoenix is #11, so it wouldn’t qualify if you define “major market” as Top 10. (Milwaukee is #37.)

And if you want to look at teams by home market size, Phoenix is 13th out of 30 - still in the top half but pretty solidly in the second third.

I'm more surprised Ion averages 1.1 million viewers a night considering the kinds of programs it shows.

I’d say these are amazing numbers. These cities are not just small media markets (especially compared to Los Angeles and Miami), the are small NBA markets. The Lakers and Heat have large National followings. These two teams have some compelling young stars, but they have been playing in relative obscurity the last couple of years.

I am a huge, life long Laker fan, and would have preferred them in the Finals, but this post season has been of the highest quality, and so far the Finals has been the most enjoyable non-Laker affair I can remember.

I-95 between Boston and Washington, LA and Chicago.

That's it.

This right here. Phoenix hasn't been in the Finals in 28 years. They are not a national, public team. So the size of the metro market is less important.

FYI:
Phoenix is now the nation's fifth-largest city (not metro).
