The good news is Phil Simms is gone.
In interviews he is adequate at best. CBS still has the AFC teams, right? Maybe CBS ratings are down and they are gambling. I don't know anyone other than Cowboys fans who like him.
The good news is Phil Simms is gone.
He could just end up in the studio. The other week, Tony Gonzalez, the ex-Chief and Falcon, announced he was leaving "The NFL Today." (Philly dot com link)

I am not sure what you mean by technical skills in this context. And I dont know what the internet means by calling him goofy. I dont agree with everything Simms says, but I find that he is more likely to say something that sounds like an actual opinion or observation, and not just mouth cliches. I actually liked him better in his earlier years when it seemed he did not get along with Nance.

Well, I know what I would mean by "technical skills" in a football analyst, I just didn't know what Steve meant by it.I think the three guys you list here (McCarver, Madden, Simms) are pretty different - Madden may have worn out his welcome with some (including me) after many decades, but even at the end I dont think he would have been replaced by an untested underperforming QB. McCarver was once an excellent MLB analyst; I dont think he wore out his welcome, I think he got objectively bad at his job. Simms is maybe the best example of having worn out his welcome - I think the best parallel for him is someone like Jeff Van Gundy. I actually still like both of them, but the bloom is probably off both roses as their once fresh act has gotten a bit stale. But even so, I think each is better than most of their peers.

I really agree with your last point - though I think Simms was pretty good about not going on and on about how he would try to outsmart MIke Singletary or whatever. What would make sense is to do a 3-man booth for a year or two with Nance, Simms and Romeo, giving Romo experience and training and the veteran team some new insights. I don't hate Romo, and he has a nice smile that probably might attract some casual fans to the broadcast. I don't recall ever deciding which game to watch when there was a Sunday network choice to make based on the announcers, but I suppose more casual fans might. The truth is almost all of my Sunday morning/afternoon NFL viewing over the last few years has been Red Zone, so none of this matters that much to me personally.

But even so, I think each is better than most of their peers.--I find a world where Solomon Wilcots has a job as a network booth analyst and Phil Simms does not befuddling. And replacing Simms with someone who has never been in a booth before even more befuddling. But here we are unless Fox or NFLN pick him up.With booth announcers, and especially with the top teams, the networks need to have them serve as the face of the brand and also keep the broadcasts from becoming stale. So there might be merit in changing the analyst more frequently while it is understandable that the network will not do that. The advantage of having an ex-player or coach as a booth analyst is that he has spent years immersed in the sport and can spot things that the viewer will not and be able to explain what is happening. Hines Ward has a dormant podcast and he said several times (in fact he repeated himself a lot and that may be why he has not put out a new one in months) that it is difficult for him to watch NFL games with non-players. He knows a lot just by seeing how the offense and defense line up and who goes in motion. But the game is going through constant evolution as offensive and defensive try to outgame each other and after 20 years a booth analyst might not instinctively see what a certain formation means. Bringing a more recent retired player/coach might lead to a better broadcast.

Simms texts a writer and says he's not done. Some options listed for him.The link above is the only piece I've seen sympathetic to Simms. A piece on NBC Sports web site notes if CBS had this figured out they would have announced it when they announced Romo was joining CBS.By the way, some other piece (I'm not sure if I put the link here) said Romo can still go back to football if someone wants him.
He could just end up in the studio. The other week, Tony Gonzalez, the ex-Chief and Falcon, announced he was leaving "The NFL Today." (Philly dot com link) B

I watched some of the Thursday night game on Amazon Prime with the "UK English" audio feed, which had soccer announcers Ross Dyer and Tommy Smyth on the call of the game. It had been advertised that it was specifically geared to international viewers who were not necessarily familiar with American football, although they really didn't do much explaining of the rules while I was watching (portions of the 1st and 2nd quarters). It was fun to hear some different voices and phrasings, but for next Thursday's game when "my" team is involved, I'll probably watch with the regular announcers.

Speaking of sports announcers, this is making the rounds now.

https://www.texasmonthly.com/article/let-us-now-praise-tony-romo-the-best-nfl-color-commentator/I haven't had a chance to watch a whole Nantz/Romo game but from what I have seen I like him. There are so many color analysts who spend so much time looking at their notes or something that they aren't paying attention to the game in front of them. Romo pays attention and can relay what he sees without jargon or cliches. I also read an article where Romo started training for the job as soon as he was signed and spent a lot of time with broadcasters learning what to do and what not to do and he also did practice games to prepare. So he is not so arrogant to think he knew everything going into the booth.Former Steeler Hines Ward had a podcast last year. After his playing days he was with NBC for Sunday night games and then Notre Dame games. He said when watches pro football at home he knows a lot more than the average fan because he can read offensive and defensive formations and he has a good idea of what will happen in the play. Romo seems to have the same knowledge and he can smoothly share it.
