Former Newfoundland politician Rex Murphy, known for his multisyllabic turn of phrase,  became a Canadian celebrity for his 21-year stint hosting CBC Radio One's live-in-all-time-zones Sunday afternoon talk show "Cross Country Checkup" and commentaries on the TV network's flagship newscast "The National," started turning from the center towards the right as the years went on, leaving his CBC gigs and a column at the Toronto Globe & Mail to the rightwing National Post--still considered throughout his career as a flag-waver and a passionate voice for the working class, even if he took money from oil companies for speeches--cancer on May 9 in Toronto:

20-30 years ago, I liked him.  He was a common person to see on CBC.

The past few years, I couldn't stand anything he said.

Kinda like some of us felt about Rush Limbaugh in the 80s when he was still carried on ABC TalkRadio...     B
