I started to see posts about a new science fiction “museum” soon to open in Santa Monica, but the more I see of it, the worse it seems.

Photos of the replica sets look like they were built by my middle schoolers. Posts on their social offer cryptic things like “a big name comic will be at our opening night party” but not reveal who. Oh, and they brought in an “expert” to determine whether their building is haunted… ugh. It all feels… well… half-assed and a little loopy. I hope I’m wrong and it turns out to be great.

Their grand opening is supposed to be this coming week… it’s not going well

“The last couple of weeks have been very rough, as two of our managing staff left before we had everything finished, leaving us volunteers to fend for ourselves, which has not been fun. We have a new CEO whose name we will reveal soon, and is a well-known horror producer/director, but we still had to quickly deal with the owners of our building, the city, and the fire department. They have been extremely helpful, but we just couldn't get everything we wanted done in time and to code with permits, including the ceiling and walls for the Enterprise D Bridge set. We WILL be having our opening Gala on May 27th, but we have to hold it in our parking lot, closed off, with most of our props and video games being brought outside for photo ops. This was the ONLY option the city gave us. After the big party, we will reorganize with our new team, and see what is needed from the city to get us open. Hopefully we can get this done in a few weeks. What we refuse to do is give up, and to quote a certain captain, we don't believe in a no-win scenario. 🖖”

RIP SciFi World, forced to close its doors before ever actually opening them.

At least we got an entertaining story out of it.

There are always stories out there about cities or small towns whose local governments are looking to attract out of town tourists by building museums or halls of fame and they end up being money pits or never opening.
