Some wondered after a category about members of the US House of Representatives included two clues about members of the Jan 6th Committee...

No more political than usual. It's a quiz show. This was a quiz subject in the field of current events. The only people who would have a complaint about this would be the serial complainers who already have a mental predilection for doing so.

No (to answer the topic question), assuming “political” here means “partisan.” Politics per se of course is a legitimate Jeopardy! subject, and the category was explicitly related to politics (The House of Representatives). It would be hard to imagine a category about the US House in 2022 that did not include answers related to the January 6 Committee and Liz Cheney.

Rather than partisan politics, this illustrates something else about contemporary Jeopardy! That I have been suspecting for a while, which is that there are a higher fraction of answers are related to contemporary, “ripped from the headlines” issues, which I guess is inevitable the longer the show is on the air.

One of the contestants on the show yesterday was a sibling of one of my work colleagues.

It's the same people who would complain about, say, in a category called Young Stars, "He plays VIktor, formerly Vanya, in the Netflix series 'The Umbrella Academy.'" The correct response is...

Who is Eliot Page?

The other controversy would be how they would handle a contestant saying "who is Ellen Page?"  Call it correct, angry social media from trans people about "ghost names."  Call it wrong, Mayim or Ken would have to do an on-camera explanation and both the right and trans people would be angry.

Pretty sure they would not write a clue like your example, indeed due to the "contestant responds with a deadname" issue. They'd be much more likely to put Elliot Page in the clue in order to elicit "Umbrella Academy" as the response.

(Of course, if they could always count on contestants responding with the last name only, as most "how to win on 'Jeopardy!'" guides suggest, that wouldn't be a problem.)
