Top movie cast: CODA... top TV cast: Succession...

top female lead: "Tammy Faye"... top male actor: "King Richard"...

"Mare of Easttown" (not Easton) takes top female movie/mini lead...

Squid Game and Ted Lasso grab a couple each...

Thanks goodness Jared Leto won nothing. But the SAG has gone down in my estimation just for nominating him...

Jesus. Sam Elliott has one of my top 5 all-time film scenes as General John Buford in “Gettysburg”, but his comments here make me wish I liked Power of the Dog more just so I had firmer ground to tell him to go to hell. The disgust and menace toward Campion that oozes from his quote sadly justifies the generally degraded view of most men that runs through Campions films. I almost want to hold him on a 5150 (DTO).

Not sure I want to listen to the interview, but I am hoping there is some larger context to this part of the conversation.  Not that I expect it to cast Elliott in a better light, but I can't help think there is something missing here that would help me understand (but probably not sympathize) why he has issues with this particular Western.  Because there are other Westerns not shot in the U.S. and other Westerns dealing with homosexuality, and I don't recall Elliott being this worked up over that.  Did Campion not cast him in something?

I listened to the whole interview. Elliott wasn’t anti-gay. Earlier in the interview, he referenced the first casting director who took an interest in him, a gay man who basically wanted Elliott to hang out in his office because he was handsome (they became friends). Elliott objected to the director’s notion that the cowboy was a myth… that there weren’t trail-blazing manly men taming the frontier. He objected to a woman from New Zealand wanting to deconstruct the male role in American history. He saw it as a mean-spirited slight against a genre he’s made a career in. He liked the director and the actors involved, but he disliked the film. He could have worded it better if he cared to, but he said a lot of impolitic things in the interview. He’s not young, and has no interest softening his words. Honestly, he seemed more upset that the hat he wore in “1883” didn’t fit.

Campion’s response was sophomoric. And I suspect it’s based on the out of context reporting of what was said as opposed to the interview itself. If her response was based in the whole interview, then it was beyond sophomoric and was infantile.

I don’t like having to defend Jane Campion, but I have listened to the entire context and I don’t think it does much to improve on the widely reported excerpts. I don’t blame her for taking offense.

OTOH, Campion did not have a great night with articulating her feelings, and may be willing to acknowledge she could have made better choices…

Watching her movie will make you not want to watch her movie…

And it's not just Elliott that Campion has unwittingly pissed off:

And an attempt by Campion to make up with the Williamses later as depicted by THR's Scott Fineberg on his Twitter feed and called by him "dancing" has been called by Black activist Twitter as "microaggression."

Yeah, that’s what I was referring to earlier. I’m not a fan of the term micro aggression, but while calling Elliott a B-i-t-c-h may be unbecoming of Campion, suggesting that she has overcome more obstacles than the two women from Compton is both ignorant and typical of the most obnoxious flavors of White Woman Feminism.

And if I were Campion I would be a lot more afraid of Venus and Serena than of the old California Cowboy…

I'll drop the separate post about Campion and the Williamses elsewhere on GG web.     B

She reiterates the B-word response on a THR podcast, where she also challenged Elliott to a "shootout" on the Warners lot...
