Kliph Nesteroff is writing a book about comedy and censorship and most of his Twitter feed right now is quotes like Mandel’s below but coming from decades ago like the forties and fifties and being said by comics like Milton Berle and George Gobel.

There’s even a repeating strain from that era of established comics saying that comedy is dying and audiences have lost their sense of humor because they can’t do blackface anymore.

Good to know that I wasn't the only one rolling my eyes at Mandel's remarks. And Nesteroff knows this subject. I highly recommend his 2018 book The Comedians. It is not a funny book, contrary to at least one Amazon reviewer's expectations, but I learned a lot from it.
