"Shifting Gears," (w.t.) with Allen as "the stubborn, widowed owner of a classic-car restoration shop," and Kat Dennings as his moving-in estranged daughter (with kids), lost original showrunners Mike Scully and Julie Thacker Scully over the summer, but gains a new leader in Dennings' old "2 Broke Girls" and "Dollface" (Hulu) 'runner Michelle Nader, beginning an overall deal with studio 20th TV...

This is one of those series that will go to air, run for seven seasons, and I still will never have heard of it.

But it's a multicam and it seems like the networks all want multicams now, even if the Fox-owned stations aren't buying any sitcom reruns and the kids start screaming "LAUGH TRACK! WE HATE LAUGH TRACKS!" Of course, the networks aren't exactly going after the kids these days, while the kids are all watching that show on Hulu about the restaurant in Chicago that claims that it's a sitcom and has no punchlines on purpose.

Like many here I used to read Ken Levine’s blog and he decried the single cam sitcom in the days of The Office and Parks and Rec, harkening back to the days of multicam. Then I heard a Maron interview with the show runner of Fresh Off the Boat. She said she broke into TV writing for Nickelodeon and she said she hated what Multicam sitcoms turned into. The network was demanding a laugh every 30 seconds which meant the script was just setup-punchline with no chance for plot or character development.

I guess I’d need to know the context in which that comment was made, but there’s a few decades of sitcom history featuring multi-camera productions that included plot and character development. Granted, there was also mind numbing pablum filmed before a live studio audience (especially in kid/family friendly programming), but any TV writer who struggles with the format should really consider a different line of work.

Somebody said that one of the secrets behind "Modern Family"'s success was that they were doing a one-camera mockumentary and still hitting a punchline every 15 seconds like a multicam.

The context is that Cheers could be a multicam without pressure for constant laughs and they could take their time and develop the plot as long as there was a payoff at the end of the scene. By the time this young woman was writing sitcoms, Cheers as a multicam was obsolete and the pressure was on for constant laughs.

Nellie today reports one of the characters in the pilot has been reworked... Allen's character's son, who would have been played by Froy Gutierrez (the 2010s MTV reboot of "Teen Wolf"), is replaced with a friend/co-worker at the shop (Seann William Scott)...
