The biggest thing I learned was the commentators are all in booths in America. I should have guessed, but I didn't.

Also surprised that the audio mix for Milan ear pieces is controlled in USA, but actually mixed in the device in Milan.

IP technology is just wow.

Scroll down the below link and you'll see who's in Italy and who isn't (a star/asterisk next to their name indicates they're in Stamford):

Thanks. So it looks like NBC has a mix of on-site and remote commentary.

Now I'm wondering what CBC is doing as that's what I'm watching.

To my knowledge, CBC is doing their stuff mostly out of Toronto. The studio shows are all there, and most of the commentary comes from people in little booths there.

The exceptions, as far as I know, are the hockey “A” crews, who are onsite.

The BBC os mostly on site in Italy, including commentary. That said, they use OBS commentary for things like the hockey where there's no British involvement.

On the other hand, Warner Brothers Discovery who have the majority of the European rights including the ability to show every event live (the BBC can only show a maximum of two events), are using London for their English language commentary and studio shows. They definitely have interviewers on location, but they're getting worse at putting commentary teams on site. See also most cycling including the Tour de France.

That said, the BBC will be doing a lot of the World Cup from the UK this summer. I think the studio shows will come from here, perhaps with the exception of British teams. I think it'll change by the Quarter Finals. They've said that the spread of games with more nations than ever before makes it too costly. ITV, who share the rights, will be using New York for their studio shows.

I found the CBC link below on the cbc website.    It seems there are few people on site, just a few key people for interviews with athletes after their sport.   I follow Devin Heroux on bluesky and he posts a lot from Italy.  Perhaps some of the commentators are on-site, but the article doesn't clarify this.    Guess it all makes sense when the OBS provides gazillions of video and audio feeds at sub-second latency.

I also found this other link that speaks of the IP tech and how the whole OBS has become quite an IT project :)

I assume the two "reporters" listed for hockey are in Italy. And while I'm sure there are factors I'm not considering, I'm a bit surprised that the hockey commentators aren't on-site.

More generally, though, for events like the sliding sports, the commentators are going to make the call from the video, anyway, so they may as well stay home. It's not like they can see enough from a broadcast booth on-site to add anything.

For hockey, the men’s panel is on site. The women’s is mixed (Andi Petrillo in Toronto, Cassie Campbell is in Italy, not sure about the other two).

Both reporters are in Italy.

For play-by-play, the first crew (Cuthbert/Johnson, Lalonde/Pounder) is in Italy. The second crews are Toronto-based.

I had thought they might send the curling crew over but they are also in Toronto.
