Andrew Ross Sorkin (I'm sure he's still with the NYT?) and Joe Kernen are officially anchors of "Squawk Box", but for a brief stretch this morning they were going at one another like a rightie host and leftie caller over the virus death toll... picture, sadly no video...

I saw this trending on the Tweety Box. I prefer CNBC’s morning and early afternoon lineup specifically because crap like this doesn’t happen. The whole point of the network is to deliver economic news and opinion in the context of current events. With the exception of Jim Cramer, they don’t do a bad job of that. FoxBusiness is bad at it, and CNN’s chief economist Richard Quest makes Jim Cramer seem lucid and reasonable.

Only among the most extreme Trump supporters is this a partisan “Lefty-Righty” debate. Most Americans, including I think just over half of all Republicans, support wearing masks, being prudent as society opens up slowly. Most Americans trust their state Governors (Blue or Red), and do not trust the President. Most Americans understand the extreme gravity of 100,000 dead in such a short time span, and understand that several tens of thousands of them would likely had been saved had the federal response been faster and smarter.

I don’t know this show or the hosts, and perhaps Sorkin made a tactical error in snapping like that on air, but I get it. I suspect a lot of Americans, regardless of political affiliation, have reached a momentary breaking point with online or irl friends, or family, who keep denying the tragedy and the danger with inane memes and faux logic.

I find this take interesting, because the few times I've caught CNBC when I'm out and about, I've always thought they are so in the tank for corporate America while trying to pretend they're not as to be insultive to my intelligence. I'm not advocating for socialists interviewing capitalists, but it's so obvious to me that they're pulling punches that it's borderline kayfabe. I've never quite figured out who their audience is supposed to be: investors who are too cheap to get the cable package that includes Bloomberg, I guess?

Well Bloomberg streams free.

CNBC has a good mix that might actually be a reasonable representation of people pro and con. The one aspect they do seem to value (just short of idolize) are venture capitalists, but they have yet to convince me of they don’t do more harm than good.

In terms of their audience, I suspect they generally attract mid-management suits who aspire to be more. I listen to them on my satellite radio at work because nearly everything in the news right now relates directly to the economy, and the other networks consider reporting the DJI as exemplary financial journalism. Planet Money is too fluffy, and although a like Marketplace... I think I’m outgrowing it. So that leaves CNBC.

Up until earlier this year, I only knew Richard Quest as the CNN guy on New Years Eve that reported from the Olive Garden at Times Square.
When I heard him talking about economy and markets, it caught me off guard.

Frankly, although I haven’t seen the NYE show, he seems like he’d be out of his depth at Olive Garden. He’s like the lovechild of Jeremy Clarkson and Piers Morgan... who has been hit on the head... a lot.

The Late Show Twitter feed lists Sorkin as the second guest tonight, after Rep. Karen Bass.

FWIW, it's been a domino chain of bumpage for Colbert this week.  Wilson was originally listed for Wednesday.  My TV listings have Judd Apatow on tonight, so we can probably expect him sometime next week to promote King of Staten Island.

Now, how many of these interviews have been banked vs. rescheduled is something I can only speculate about.

Speaking of banked vs. rescheduled... at the beginning of Colbert's Tuesday interview with Keegan-Michael Key, the two mentioned that they had taped an interview two weeks ago that was intended to air that night, but in light of the past week's news events they decided to scrap that interview and tape a new one.

It made sense to do that. It made me wonder, now there is a completely unaired segment or two with Key; the next time Colbert is in re-runs, will he run that instead of something we have already seen? Which then made me think, could Late night shows just start doing extra segments with guests to use during rerun weeks, perhaps intentionally with more evergreen material?

The closest thing I've seen to what you're describing is using guests appearances to tape them for a comedy bit that airs a few weeks later.  The comedy bit may or may not require lots of celebrities.  This link is for one from the latter category.

Other things that have been done lately are:

Padding new content with repeats of past interviews and/or bits.
Colbert did this the first week, doing new stuff in place of the monologue and any desk pieces, leaving the rest of the repeat as is.
I've seen British Jimmy do this, and I think East Coast Jimmy has as well.
Last week's Tonight Shows were supposed to be "Staff Favorites" clip shows.  No idea if any new content was added.  I know Colbert tried to do this at one point, taping segment intros for repeats, but it didn't stick.

Extra content - usually full interview segments - usually finds its way online through official show channels.  Conan has so far put all of the full interviews from the home shows online.  My guess is that putting unseen stuff online rather than bank for broadcast would be the default setting.

Music stuff seems a bit different.  Colbert's Late Show often advertises an additional song available online, but I'm only aware of one of those making it to broadcast when the artist (John Prine in this case) passed.

Before the Memorial Day break, Stephen thanked his crew for the last eight weeks of extra work doing the shows from home. Was he expecting to come back the Ed after the week off?

I have a feeling that we’ll never see reruns of these “late night at home” shows, except for the clip shows. Having an opening with the host in his home studio instead of in front of a live audience will immediately date the shows to Spring 2020, and will cause immediate channel changing.

No. Just taking advantage of the demarcation.
