Donahue became kind of a caricature of himself, but at his best and in his time he brought smart, real conversation about important people and topics to afternoon television, probably the last one to do that.

I had to do some research to figure out I was at the Donahue show in 1995.  I was in NYC with a couple of friends to see a couple of Broadway shows; neither wanted to go to The Today Show in the morning (a habit I still have if I happen to be in NYC overnight), so I went and Donahue's show was handing out audience tickets to people on The Today Show plaza.  I had no interest in passing up the opportunity to see the show.  I remember the topic was about mental health, but I don't remember anything else about the show, e.g., whether or not I asked a question.  I had barely enough time to squeeze in Donahue before I had to meet my friends at a matinee of Indiscretions. I knew Jude Law was in the play, which is how I figured out when I was there.
