Sean McDonough and Jon Gruden ain't doing it for me. Hearing the MNF theme song, I remember how excited I used to get to watch it. Now it's just meh. I think the announcers used to keep it interesting. I can't think of any who do that today.
Maybe I changed.

Part of what's changed is sports talk radio, dedicated sports cable channels, and the internet. Plus gambling and fantasy football. Decades ago we would turn on a Monday night game and know very little about the game or teams unless it was a home team or one we were following. So the broadcast team bringing us the game could make it entertaining and not tell us stuff we already heard or knew. Now it's tough for a broadcast team to bring something new to a game.

I think Michaels and Collinsworth are the best team working today. Not the best all-time by far, but the best working today.

When MNF first came on, the half time highlights were one of the best parts of the show, partly because of Howard (who as a kid I actually loved) but also because even if you, as I always did, watched two games on Sunday and then read the paper the next day, there was still a lot you did not know about most of the games. 

McDonough is fine - just not flashy. I have never been a fan of Gruden's schtick, and maybe, as JW was saying in another similar thread, most people are starting to tire of it.

But the real reason MNF is not as special as it used to be is that it is not as special as it used to be. First, SNF is now the premium prime time football package (and the very best football broadcast on television). MNF is really the old ESPN SNF, which means it gets B and often C rated match-ups. Second, the NFL has diluted the shit out of its product. Thursday night football threatens to make October and November football about as special as November NBA games.

I certainly don't see any broadcaster who could suddenly make MNF special again by himself.

Not to bump this thread, but to me the best one at doing the highlights was Chris Berman. Not to be mean towards Howard, who also was great in that role, but Berman really made NFL PrimeTime his own. But he did copy Cosell a lot. There were many Sundays, after the last late game finished ,i'd switch to ESPN.
