Taylor Tomlinson wants to return to standup full-time, so the reboot of the former Chris Hardwick Comedy Central panel game will end in June, with CBS not planning any first-run replacements at 12:37 a.m., something Byron Allen must be ecstatic about:

BTW. Google Groups wouldn't let me put the title of "@fter Midnight" as styled in the subject line.

I had set my DVR to record it regularly.   I never watched a whole episode -- heck maybe never more than 5 mins a few times.    I did see a few clips on youtube.

On the other hand, I have listened to Craig's interviews on his podcasts more often.

The real weakness of the show was recruiting quality panelists. On the rare occasion they had veteran comedians on the show could reach its potential. I’m all for giving emerging talents a national showcase to show what they’ve got and make a name for themselves, but the usual panelists they got seemed to come from open mics and that’s where their future is. I thought over time they would tinker with the format to make a better show, and they did, and also to develop a roster of talent that would be reliably funny. But that never happened.

It's a shame because I think the show was finally finding its footing (and was starting to attract a better class of panelist than they were able to pull in the early days).  I still believe that the 1-hour format hurt the show in the long-run; one of the reasons the original format worked as well as it did was that the half-hour format didn't leave a ton of room for a 'talk show' segment or other weird away-from-the-podium games.  (The fact that Chris Hardwick's hosting style could best be described as 'hamster on speed' helped as well.)

I won't pretend to know the truth behind the series not getting renewed , but Taylor's star is on the rise, and she can and will make more doing standup and other creative ventures. As she and Team Coco are well connected, I predict a podcast at the very least.

I can't imagine any 12:35 show making a profit for a network anymore, though I would gladly return to Hollywood to produce a late night newscast.

The article I read (I forget if it was Variety or Hollywood Reporter) made it clear that the main reason for the cancellation was Tomlinson's desire to be out on the road doing standup; the taping schedule has severely constricted her ability to take road dates.

As for replacements, the network has made it clear they're not producing a replacement program.  I'm sure somewhere Byron Allen is salivating at the possibilities.

OP Mark J also observed the latter.    B

If that was the case CBS could have replaced her and kept the show going. I’m not claiming any malfeasance but if the show meant anything to anybody (including advertisers) CBS wouldn’t be canceling it and returning the time slot to affiliates.

It's very possible that the network gave it a second season to keep Colbert happy, since he owns part of the show. But I guess the feeling now is that a 12:37 show is not that important anymore. "Nightline" will stay on because News will demand it, but if and when Meyers replaces Fallon "Late Night" will be toast (or vice versa, if everyone keeps kissing Trump's butt).

If we take the statements at face value, they had already renewed the show for a third season before Taylor Tomlinson decided to leave.

That tells me that CBS was happy to have it around while it was there, but didn't want to spend the time and money involved in either finding a new host for After Midnight or developing a new show. Or they've just spent two years trolling the Redditors who refuse to admit that Chris Hardwick isn't walking through that door.

When Richard Simmons was told his talk show was cancelled, he sat in the studio and sobbed uncontrollably for fifteen minutes. The press release stated he was voluntarily/happily giving up his show to focus on his fitness endeavors.

When they brought back Arsenio’s talk show, Jay Leno came on the show to announce the syndicators had renewed it for a second season. The show was axed a month later.

Nothing in Hollywood should ever be taken at face value.
