Just heard from mutual friends on Facebook that Rick, who was David Letterman's longtime film coordinator at both NBC and CBS, has died. No cause of death is known yet.

Rick was the guy who found all the obscure film clips that turned up on Dave's shows, like the clip of a monkey washing a cat. I knew him from when I used to attend the Syracuse Cinefest every year along with my fellow vintage movie enthusiasts. Can't say I knew him well, but I do remember him being a very nice guy.

The Letterman YouTube channel has posted this compilation of his on-air appearances, starting with a real eye-opener:

The Donz, of course, goes into much more detail. Worth reading.

I met him at Cinefest too.  My favorite of his Late Show appearances was when he did Who Asked For It and was introduced as Phil Sterling from Syracuse who taught film.

Yep - Phil Serling, who was a cousin of the legendary Rod Serling. What a character Phil was!
