Quickie Review: The Morning Show

Wow. Not sure how they made both Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston not only unfunny, but also unsympathetic and unlikeable. If only they’d been placed on a show with a coherent point of view. I mean... ugh.

I just watched the last episode. Totally agree with the second part of Kevin’s quickie review; the show is incoherent. It wants to look like high brow peak tv, but is written like Scandal. It mistakes convenient and sudden melodramatic character shifts for psychological complexity. It’s not all bad, there is probably a decent 90 minute movie to be had with skillful editing of the ten episodes, but it does seem like a huge waste.

I might disagree a bit with the first part of his review. It seems to me they intentionally took two of the most likable actors of the last 30 years and had them play very unlivable people on purpose, and in some respects I think it worked for them, Aniston and Carell are comforting presences, and keep you hoping the show is eventually going to be worthy of them (spoiler alert: it doesn’t).

I did not hate this show, just felt let down by it. I also finished The Watchmen over the weekend, and the contrast was stark, and unflattering to The Morning Show. I had no context for The Watchmen, and had the rare and extremely pleasurable experience of constantly asking wtf I was watching, while enjoying every inch of the ride.
