Hardly anything will change, unless you include the Coco-branded channel he'll launch on the satcaster. https://deadline.com/2022/05/siriusxm-team-coco-conan-obrien-1235030253/ (link)

I’m sure there is an administrative upside to the acquisition, but I don’t foresee any creative or artistic advantage

It could be what keeps the company from going under. I have no idea how the company is currently structured but there could be people in roles like acquiring sponsorships or selling ad time who have burned out. Being able to turn these responsibilities over to Sirius could be the best option.

I like craft beer and follow the industry. Before the pandemic there was a wave of buyouts of pioneering small breweries. As much as fans of a brewery would express a sense of betrayal, the founders would inevitably put out a statement talking about years of 16 hour days and twenty years of total commitment and how this was the best way for them to step aside without shutting down the business.

My impression (from listening to “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend”) is that advertising sales and some production responsibilities for the Team Coco podcasts have been handled by Earwolf, which was already owned by SiriusXM.

Coincidentally, I was reading the following article on the weekend which provided a bit more background info on podcasting networks.

Biggest sticking point for me is that Sirius is not really a successful company, is it? For them to spend money acquiring non-proprietary content seems at the very least unprofitable. If they are hoping to expand the brand beyond its own app/service, that further indicates to me that their offerings are indeed failing.

According to some recent Edison Research data they published, Conan's podcast was the #26 biggest podcast in the US in Q1 2022.

That means that it should be very profitable in advertising terms. The podcast industry broke $1bn in North America last year and is now projected to reach $4bn by 2024. This is first and foremost an ad inventory buy. Sirius gets to monetise all Team Coco's output alongside things like Office Ladies and Marc Maron.

Being proprietary isn't necessarily the way to go if you've got great ad revenues. Who'd use a SiriusXM app to listen to podcasts ahead of a proper podcast app? Plus SiriusXM is US only, and they can monetise globally with ads.

Most radio companies are pivoting to podcasts at least for part of their businesses, and the accompanying SiriusXM channel is just a nice-to-have. This is about podcast ad revenues.

I went back and read the original article now that you all have generously provided context. Sirius is paying in the neighborhood of $150 million for the Team Coco archives and an ongoing content deal for 5 more years. Conan will also program a comedy channel for SiriusXM.

Even as an old guy I know how to stream music and podcasts from my phone to a Bluetooth speaker. Sirius has to know that their whole satellite receiver business is a stranded cost and their future is in streaming.

I've been an SXM subscriber for about 15 years.     My observations on the company/tech and evolution.
1.  Car radios and physical radios were the original market, but they have evolved.
2.  They offer radio subscriptions (which includes the streaming app) and streaming only subscriptions.
3.  If you ever get a subscription, I suggest you NEVER renew at full-rate.   Customer Service will always offer you a better deal when you say you are going to cancel.
3.  The past- few years the on-air hosts have really been talking-up the app ("you can listen when you get out of your car"), or Alexa or other outlets for streaming.
4.  Every year or two they morph a couple voice channels into other voice channels (Cosmo radio was killed off and became something else).
5. specific artist stations get created, I'm assuming when an artist or record company pays them enough (see U2 or the occasional Dave Matthews special channels).
6.  Their streaming service offers a gazillion variants of their main channels.   (80s on 8, has 80s-Dance, 80s-Party, 80s-Chill, etc).
7. I don't listen to Howard.
8. I do watch some Howard video clips of interviews or artists performing.
9.  I think they have a "podcast" section that allows you to use it like a podcast player, even if the podcasts are not SXM content.
10.   Lastly, it seems they have channel talent creating their own podcasts.   A few months ago I learned that Nicole (hits1) and Rich Davis (hits1, etc) have a Parenting podcast.     Burp.
11.   Madison on AltNation is either loved or hated, according to twitter.

webSite xmplaylist.com has data on how often songs are played.   I sometimes update it and calculate some metrics.    To read the chart, it says that on Hits1 you can expect to hear the 4-most frequent songs about 12-14 times per day.   At the other end of the scale, on Classic Rewind you would expect to hear the 4-most frequently played songs ~ once per day.     (NSR is No Shoes Radio and the odd peak there is always a Kenny Chesney Song, as it is His station).

Think of this as the audio equivalent of when Seinfeld streaming rights were bought by Netflix.  Limited term deal with some level of exclusivity.

All this Team Conan activity has me wondering, and I haven't been able to figure this out online.  Team Coco and Conanco are separate entities?  More to the point, is Conan still going to do that HBOMax program that was announced for after his weeknight show ended?
