Carrie Underwood, the second most successful alum of the OG music reality comp after Kelly Clarkson, will take Katy Perry's spot on the judges' panel when the new season starts in the spring, the first panel change since the show moved to ABC seven years ago:

And since we're talking about "Idol" alums, I'll mention that Mr. Aitken and his family  will be in the second half of "Celebrity Family Feud" Tuesday night on ABC, up against music composer/producer David Foster and his family, including wife (and "Idol" alum) Katharine McPhee. Those of us who braved it through "Smash" would've preferred McPhee to go up against Megan Hilty, so we could have Team Karen/Team Ivy again on social media, or as I put it, I'd rather live life to the Hilty than get the McPheever.

Blame Seacrest--he came up with "McPheever."

Adding to Mr. Jeffries' fine notification:

Parker "Aitken" will be playing on the team with his parents.  McPhee is Parker's aunt, given that she is married to his uncle who is his mother's brother.

(I'll have to record the episode, my first time to see the show, just as I had to watch for the first time The Masked Singer earlier this year.  Because I'll be at the musical Back to the Future that evening.)

About Smash -- I'm not impressed by what I've read about the Broadway version.  All of the music from the series is on my household playlist.  Kudos to the entire Smash cast for taking part in the Broadway tribute to the series several years ago where I was fortunate to get a last minute ticket.  I've now seen both Hilty and McPhee in concert -- separately (McPhee tours with her husband).  Hilty will be back on Broadway in the fall in Death Becomes Her, I believe.

And, speaking of Smash cast members, who knew that our ex-president was obsessed with Debra Messing?  It's in Ramin Setoodeh's book, Apprentice in Wonderland.

I happened to see "Death Becomes Her" in its Chicago tryout and it's a fun show. I should mention that a lot of the crowd at the matinee I was at was there to see former Destiny's Child Michelle Williams (of course, not the "Dawson's Creek" Michelle Williams), who almost steals the show from Megan and Jennifer Simard.

Yet another connection:

The music director of Death Becomes Her is Mr. "Aitken's" music director.

A half-hour special is scheduled to follow The Oscars® March 2nd, a week before the season premiere*... it will officially introduce Underwood as the newest judge, plus a few audition sneak peeks... she will also get the plum performing spot on DCNYREwRS, right before the crowd sings "Imagine" (or did they replace that? I've slept through the last three, at least) and the ball drops...

*Uhhh, spring starts later in March...
