TMZ revealed late in 2019 the rock icon had spent the previous five years getting periodic treatments for throat cancer he said ultimately started with a metal guitar pick he'd held in his mouth. The 'toob is rife with (non-Donz) posts of his band's Letterman appearances.

MTV rose to prominence by standing on the shoulders of great groups like Van Halen. Pop music would always find a home on MTV, but if rockers like Eddie and Diamond Dave hadn’t started playing with the visual medium, it would never have gotten widespread attention so early on.

Van Halen is probably the only one of those Rock groups that I bothered watching on MTV back in the day, almost all due to Eddie. I am not a mega fan, but he is another in a line of recent pop culture deaths of people who have just always been there, in the background of my life. Hard to imagine life without him, sober reminder that there is less time (for me) than I might imagine to find out.

when I was a pre-teen to late teen, my brother (4 years older) was in a band with some buddies.   They played covers and a few originals.   The guitar player (Rob Cappelletti) was amazing.   They often played Van Halen (incl Eruption) and lots of Rush (incl La Villa Strangiato).    Because I was the roadie (and they rehearsed in our house), I know waaaay too much VH, Rush, and other songs.    Songs will come on the radio and I can boop-beep-dum-dum-dum the bass lines, guitars, and drums.   Eddie's guitar work was remarkable.

I also know lots of VH because those formative years were 1980 to the late 80s.    I was a Friday Night Videos, MuchMusic, MTV, and Good Rockin' Tonight fan for all the up to date videos.   (closing by bringing this back to TV :) )
