Semi off topic, but Chadney's, the restaurant Carson gave dinners to
during "Stump The Band," has been renovated and is scheduled to be
reopened as a (hopefully) trendy bar. Problem is it is in a stretch of
Burbank in the process of being converted to a ghost town as more
people take office space hearer the 5 freeway. Aside from the
obnoxious karaoke bar nearby (yes, I know obnoxious karaoke bar is
redundant), not a lot of social life had there.

The thing that's screwy about the story is that when he started doing "Wheel" and for a least a few years thereafter, he was doing weather at KNBC and that "Wheel" scheduled the breaks so that he could do the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts, come back and then do the last two shows.  Of course, I believe he gave up the weather gig sometime between "Wheel" becoming the smash hit in syndication that it became and the CBS late-night show, so it's entirely possible that at that point he and Vanna could start knocking back margaritas at Pepe's during the dinner break.

Depending on how quickly he left KNBC after the nighttime version
started, that's still a pretty long window. There's a good six years
between the start of the syndicated show (1983) and when taping moved
to CBS Television City to accommodate the daytime version's network
switch (1989).

Sajak also suggested that the drinking took place when the show was still having winners 'buy' prizes with their winnings.  He said the dinner breaks were longer then to accommodate bringing in new stuff, so drinking a couple extra wasn't that tough.
