Having been down there during the festival a couple years ago, I noted then that the locals, for the most part, don’t like the big crowds that clog the roads to the desert... they aren’t beneficial for the local economy. Other events like Mod Week make money for the locals. It isn’t Austin which counts on the money that SXSW brings in.

Kevin - your original post was a bit overly dismissive of both who attends SXSW and the festival itself. SXSW is more than just a music festival - there’s also the film festival, interactive conference and education conference, which all precede music and are largely attended by professionals in those industries*. Trust me when I tell you that IA attendees my get their drink on, but they’re also very mindful of personal grooming and conference etiquette.* I attended interactive for 9 years while with my previous employer, as at that time the education panels fell under IA.

Protecting the audience, sure, but protecting Alex? He's much too far away from them to be at risk. Unless he does a lot of pressing the flesh at a taping?

The big festival in Austin won’t be occurring due to fears all the people will be too drunk or too stoned to remember to wash their hands.
