"It’s a popular show we want to keep on our air, and it’s a very good show as well," Kelly Kahl told a TCA audience Thursday.

He also addressed the 'Big Brother' controversy (q.v.), believing a producer overstepped their bounds somewhere.

In other CBS/TCA news, Kahl said that despite sucky ratings this year, "Love Island" will get a second trip next summer.

Britons, meanwhile, are eating it up like ices on the d@mned hot days they've had to endure in recent weeks.

For what it's worth, it took about three seasons before ITV2's perseverance paid off. I can't imagine it's *that* expensive to produce, so probably worth keeping going.

(That all said, wild horses wouldn't get me to watch it. But it hits a young demo in the UK like a bullseye.)

A reality series typically costs a tiny fraction of what a scripted drama or comedy costs to produce. Talent fees are nonexistent, writer and producer rates are vastly lower, set and studio fees are next to nothing. A failed reality show will typically generate more profit than a successful scripted show in terms of straightforward in-the-black vs in-the-red numbers.

Not to diminish the fact that the first 4 out of 5 evicted from Big Brother this season were PoC, there's no way the producers could have predicted that 3 of the 4 in the "Camp Comeback" challenge would end up being PoC, and that the old white guy would actually win. And before anyone says "they should have altered the challenge", while the motto of BB is "expect the unexpected", they'd been pushing the "Camp Comeback" twist (and the challenge rules) for 3 weeks at that point. To alter course would have made the production look worse, because it would have hung a lantern on them trying to actively avoid looking racist. (And it wouldn't have mattered, because evictee #5 was also a PoC.)
