With whispers that what’s left of the Jeopardy! writers’ room may reuse and recycle old clues for the upcoming season, several ToC contestants have announced that they won't cross the picket line at Sony.

When Alex hosted, they produced new episodes during the 2007-08 writers' strike reusing old material, and nobody seemed to notice. (It's unknown whether there were any potential contestants who refused to cross the picket line.)

During the writers' strikes prior to that, the writers were not part of the WGA, so the show was unaffected.

I'm actually in the potential contestant pool right now, so if they do wind up producing new episodes somehow, and they call me... well, I guess I'll have a big decision to make at that point.

I know the producers intend for the show to continue regardless of the strike (same with Wheel). In any game show, there are countless unused questions produced that are rejected but not thrown away. I still have thousands of unused questions from “Challenge of the Child Geniuses” that I use in my middle school classroom, and there were only a handful of episodes even produced of that.

The issue is that writers rooms in game shows operate independently of and isolated from the rest of the production crew, and never the two shall meet. So if the writers filed away the questions in an unmarked drawer of a file cabinet, or if they put them in a password protected folder on a computer, locating and sorting through them could be problematic. Anyone from the production office who walks into the writers room cannot just walk back into the production office. So it’s going to be an ordeal.

Sony now says that the TOC will be postponed until after the WGA strike, but there will be new episodes in the fall and the writing staff wrote the material for ABC celebrity season 2 coming in the fall before the strike:

Postponing the tournament was always an option. I recall while listening to Inside Jeopardy last summer that Davies wants the tournament to air at the same time every year because it brings a ratings boost. But it’s not worth all the bad PR of forcing contestants to cross a picket line.

If they used spare regular Jeopardy clues for Celebrity Jeopardy the contestants would have scores in the double digits going into final.

Although I can't imagine Sean Connery saying "your mother Bialik!"

Given the current hosting situation, expect Mr Connery to reference all of Ken’s wives, sisters, and sister-wives.
