Live from Grant Park in Chicago, starting in little over a half-hour from now (3 p.m. ET), with two channels covering two different stages for Friday through Sunday from 2 p.m. ET, if you want to get down with what the kids are listening to--the only headliners you've probably heard of are Metallica tonight (11:15 p.m. ET) and Green Day on Sunday (9:15 p.m. ET):

There is but one Lollapalooza, and it is in Washington state, not Chicago. And it is in the 1990s. And it contains music that you couldn’t pay me to listen to.

From a 54 year old father who listens to a lot of his 15 year old daughter’s music:

I would highly recommend Beach Bunny at 5:15p on Sunday. They remind me of some of the music from the 80s.

I watched some of this yesterday and I was impressed by the presentation (less so by the music). What has become possible to do when the venue is designed to have cameras and with modern digital equipment, both video and audio, is terrific. Maybe it’s because I was brought up with concert documentaries made by young guys with ancient equipment and no budget, but Loolapalooza looked and sounded great. I’ll watch more even though I’m not likely to find any new bands to follow. Another thing I liked was there were no commercial breaks in the middle of an act.

One reason I tuned in was because this is probably going to be a big part of the music scene in the future. It might not have made technical or financial sense in the past to do a live TV transmission of a concert or a festival in the past unless it was a one-off like Live Aid. Unless some disaster strikes we should expect to see more of these on subscription services in the future.
