Happy 60th to Days Of Our Lives

The residents of Salem are still like sand through the hourglass. They are now shooting months in advance, oftentimes multiple episodes in a day, hiring actors for a single day to film a month’s worth of scenes. All to air in near-obscurity on Peacock. But once upon a time, they were the flagship of NBC’s daytime lineup. 

I will always have a soft spot for Days. It was my mom’s soap; literally the reason we had a VCR in the house. Decades later, working frequently on the NBC lot, it was fun for me to see the Days cast in the hallways. Drake (aka Roman or John, depending on the year) was keen to talk baseball — at length — even to non-sports fans. Deidre (aka Marlena or the Devil) called everybody “babe.” Watching the rehearsal feed, I learned that the veteran actors could learn their lines and block their scenes in record time, while the younger cast (looking at you, Alison Sweeney) couldn’t remember their name. The storylines were sophomoric and melodramatic, but still better than a lot of prime time shows (like Dynasty or Lost).

Without Days Of Our Lives, there would be no Q from Star Trek. There would be no Harley Quinn in Batman. And were it not for this series, I’d have missed an amazing opportunity to completely freak out Leann Rimes… again. 

So it’s all but forgotten, but I’ll commemorate it here, before it fades away completely.
