The singing star (and "Idol" alumnus) will be playing the role made famous by Mary Martin and Julie Andrews in NBC's live televersion of the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, scheduled for next holiday season--since she doesn't have a track record in live theater, the show tune queens are sure to start the message board complaining:

And let it be emphasized that the objections won't be because of her winning "Idol."  Despite all of Simon Cowell's "this isn't 'Cabaret Idol,' this is 'American Idol'" pronouncements, at least three "Idol" Top12ers have appeared on Broadway and Constantine Maroulis and Diana DeGarmo have at least some cred from musical theater fans.  And Laura Osnes, probably the most acclaimed of recent new Broadway stars, got to New York thanks to that crappy NBC "Grease" casting couch reality comp.

Carrie Underwood is cute as a button. I can't stand her yelping voice, but she is cute as a button. Her voice is too aggressive in that twangy country way. It is like her voice forced itself into my home and is having its way with me without my consent.

And here's Underwood singing the title song on a 2001 special:

And former Broadway Maria (and co-star of NBC's "Go On") Laura Benanti retweeted this from that "Billy on the Street" guy:  "How should I kill myself?"  Would he be saying this if it was Madonna?

She's actually singing flatter than I would have expected, as if someone ordered her to tone down the twang, and she went too far the other direction, making the song less full of life.

I don't think she's singing flat as much as she's singing to a much more restrained arrangement. I think it suits that venue. Julie Andrews really belted out that song and she had to in her scene in the film in order to stand out as the single figure in a huge landscape.

If the upcoming is done as a movie Underwood will also have to belt out the song. If it's done more like a stage show she can stick to a restrained version.

I just hope for her sake that Underwood can bring more to her acting, especially as a lead, than Katharine McPhee brought to Smash.

Make that three who “have at least some cred from musical theater fans”:

From today:

(And Carrie needs to work on her phrasing.)

And don't forget AI DQ-turned-Voice finalist Frenchie Davis.  After the whole Idol to-do, she had a three year stint in "Rent" and went on to do a number of other productions.

Didn't Fantasia do a stint in "The Color Purple"?

Not to mention Tamyra Gray, Jordin Sparks, Taylor Hicks, and DeGarmo’s fiancé, who’ve also done Broadway.

Melissa, to Mark J, in part:

Tuesday, at a sold-out Musikfest Café, Bethlehem, PA.

Aside: Does anyone know what exactly they call those National Park Service people who stand at exhibits inside parks, monuments, etc., and tell applicable stories?

They are rangers, even if they don't do much ranging.

"Interpretation" is one part of the ranger job description.
